Why would the Fed be "concerned" that more domestic people and less foreigners are buying US Treasury debt? Isn't that a good thing?

 

As for the Fed's 2008 junk portfolio, they did bail out the economy with that purchase as far as I know, and as they unwind it they'll take losses that will carry over to their P&L. We will pay that, because the Fed including each of the 12 Reserve Banks pays all net profits to the US Treasury every year. Losses on the unwind will just reduce that payment.

Yeah I remember when it was given away. Didn't make a lot of sense then, irreplaceable asset. Did Carter get to do that unilaterally? Well I suppose you can corrupt enough Congressmen to agree to it anyway. We had a lot of business going thru that area (Colombia, Nicaragua, etc.) so rich payoffs could be arranged.
