‘China will take revenge’ if Canada doesn’t free Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou: Global Times editor

Canada can expect retaliation “far worse” than the detainment of a former diplomat if Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou isn’t released, the editor of a state-friendly Chinese newspaper said in a video posted Wednesday.

“Meng Wanzhou was released on bail, but Canada must do more to restore her freedom and put an end to this incident,” Hu Xijin, editor of the Global Times, said in the video.

“Otherwise, China will definitely take retaliatory measures against Canada.”

"Reuters reported that China had detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig. While China has not confirmed the incident, public opinion is already speculating that this is a retaliatory action for Meng's arrest. Although there is no evidence that the detainment of Kovrig was linked to Meng's case, people assumed it was because Canada had gone too far, were expecting China to take revenge, and felt this was probably it.

"I personally believe that if Canada extradites Meng to the US, China's revenge will be far worse than detaining a Canadian. Although Canada is a US ally, it should not get deeply drawn into the Canada-US game. It's in Canada's best interests to try and remain neutral."
