England’s most senior Catholic cleric apologises for withholding evidence of child abuse allegations

The country’s most senior Catholic cleric apologised for withholding evidence of abuse allegations made against JRR Tolkien’s son during his priesthood.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols told an inquiry on Thursday he was focused on settling legal action against the church quickly when, in 2002, he chose not to disclose a key document to a complainant.

The note showed that accusations against Father John Tolkien had been made to the church in 1968 - the only evidence of a contemporaneous complaint made about his behaviour.

But despite lawyers telling Cardinal Nichols - then Archbishop of Birmingham - that the findings supported already credible claims by Birmingham man Christopher Carrie, a briefing paper recorded him saying: “The Archdiocese would prefer not to disclose this document even if it means settling the action.”

On Thursday, the clergyman expressed remorse about his actions as he appeared before the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, which is investigating child protection failings within the Catholic church.

He told the hearing: “In the context of the claim and the discussions with the solicitors, my priority was to get that settled and when that was settled I simply didn’t give the matter any further thought, for which I apologise.

“Looking back, I wish solicitors had pointed that out to me; they might have said…maybe there is a duty for you to let the claimant know what you have said.”

Cardinal Nichols, who is currently the Archbishop of Westminster, fended off suggestions the information was suppressed as part of a “cover up” to protect the church’s reputation.

Mr Carrie had taken civil action against the Archdiocese of Birmingham over abuse allegedly suffered at the hands of Father Tolkien, the son of the author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

The priest, who died in 2003 aged 85, had been accused of twice sexually abusing the 11-year-old Mr Carrie in the mid-1950s, dressing up his actions as a “blessing”. Prosecutors decided not to press criminal charges against him in February 2002 due to his ailing health.

Lawyers for the Archdiocese of Birmingham identified at least two other alleged victims and determined that Mr Carrie’s claims were consistent and likely to succeed in court.

They then uncovered a record from 1968 of a complaint made to the Archdiocese about Father Tolkien - who was sent for treatment as a result.

Asked be inquiry counsel Jacqueline Carey why he had failed to disclose the note, Cardinal Nichols said: “My main purpose, I must admit, was to try and avoid civil action in court.”

The archbishop also expressed regret that more decisive action was not taken in 1968, after another accuser came forward with abuse allegations from 1970.

On the spectre of child abuse hanging over the church, he said: “The presence in the church of the terrible evil…it is something which will mark my priesthood always and it is something that - the more I hear, the more I reflect on it - is a cause of great sorrow and shame for me and indeed I know for the Catholic Church.”

Holland Heats Up, Belgium Burns As French Yellow Vest Protests Spread Across Europe

As protests continue to rage in France, discontent is festering elsewhere in Europe at the same time. What began as a routine protest deep in Paris has swelled to over a hundred thousand people and approximately five locations throughout the country. Anger over yet another eco-fascist “gas tax” seems to have been the straw that finally broke the camel’s back.

This, of course, was combined with other problems too: constant foreign military adventures, falling wages, rising costs of living, rising costs of healthcare, privatization of essential services, cultural disruption as a result of heavy migration, and growing unemployment as a result of Free Trade globalist policies.

Developing: DOJ Unwilling to Make Investigator John Huber Available for Today’s Hearing on Clinton Foundation Abuses

The House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations is holding a hearing on Capitol Hill Thursday on the Clinton Foundation.

Mark Meadows (R-NC), the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, will lead the hearing today. Three Clinton Foundation whistleblowers are speaking today. And Tom Fitton from Judicial Watch is also testifying.

Democrats brought in a “whistle-blower” from the Trump Foundation to testify at the hearing today.

Mark Meadows made clear to the Democrats and audience: “I think we should look at all foundations. We have the $2.5 billion of the Clinton Foundation versus the $19 million of the Trump Foundation.”

The Trump Foundation gave away more money than was collected.

Democrats are hoping to change the subject at the hearing today away from the Clinton crime cartel.

Meadows told the audience today that the Department of Justice was unwilling to make John Huber available for the hearing today. Huber was assigned months ago by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions to investigate several controversies about Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.

Authorities Respond to Bomb Threats Across United States

Law enforcement authorities around the United States on Thursday were responding to a wave of bomb threats, many of them sent by email.

Bronx Science said it evacuated its building at 11 a.m. after it received a bomb threat by phone. The school said students were "currently well supervised at neighboring schools."

The New York police department confirmed it received a call about the threat and responded to the school. The department later tweeted it was monitoring "multiple bomb threats that have been sent electronically to various locations throughout the city."

Nearly a dozen threats were received at businesses throughout South Florida, including in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach. At least three others were reported in Orlando.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating after multiple bombs threats were allegedly mailed to "numerous businesses in the state." Authorities said the MSP Fusion Center is tracking the activity.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department was working a number of threats called in from San Marcos, Vista and Lakeside, all small communities north and east of downtown San Diego.

All appear to be private businesses, deputies said.

One reporting party stated he was told to provide $20,000 or a bomb would be detonated.

An employee at a Chicago-area hospital told authorities they received an email about a bomb threat to the building Thursday around noon. Police confirmed they were responding to the report but did not provide more details. Other reports of bomb threats began surfacing on social media in the Chicago area but those incidents could not immediately be confirmed.

State police in Connecticut were investigating what they called several “suspicious incidents” across the state, including at a school in Griswold, the National Shooting Association and a plaza in Seymour.

Employees at the Jewish Community Center and multiple branches of the Fire Credit Union in San Francisco were evacuated after reports of emailed bomb threats, NBC Bay Area reported. Police are investigating.

A spokesman for the Oklahoma City police told NBC News that individuals in and around that city have gotten 10 to 13 specific email bomb threats, with specific addresses.

Nancy Pelosi Announces Democrat Plan to Go After Trump’s Tax Returns

During her weekly press conference, Nancy Pelosi announced a plan for congressional Democrats to target President Trump’s tax returns.

Pelosi promises action on Trump tax returns

Democrats are set to take power in January, taking over the House of Representatives and, essentially, grinding all congressional work to a halt. There are rumors floating around Capitol Hill that Democrats will immediately push for impeaching the President with what little power they hold in the House. (RELATED: Nadler Floats Impeachment, Says New Mueller Revelations Could Justify Removing Trump.)

Pelosi is feeling empowered and she let her confidence show by announcing the Democrats’ first target upon taking power: Trump’s tax returns. Here’s what she said:

Yes, there is popular demand for the Congress to request the president’s tax returns. [Ways and Means] will have their path as we go forward. I’m sure the White House will resist, and so the question is, where do we go from there?

Nancy’s gambit

Pelosi is taking a big risk here, dedicating congressional resources to obtaining Trump’s tax returns. She’s assuming she’ll find something. Last we checked, the last publicly available copy of Trump’s returns showed absolutely no wrongdoing. (RELATED: Rachel Maddow’s Ratings Tank After Trump Taxes Flub.)

Pelosi is right in assuming the tax returns will be tough to obtain. The IRS currently has them locked in a vault. (RELATED: IRS Creates New Vault to Hold President Trump’s Tax Returns.) The White House is going to fight tooth and nail to keep them in the dark as well. At best, we can expect a long, drawn-out court fight over the release of the documents.

Other legal threats to Trump

Pelosi’s promise to seek Trump’s tax returns isn’t the only legal conundrum Trump will face in the near future. Yesterday, the New York attorney general announced her office will be looking into the finances of the Trump Organization. (RELATED: Incoming New York Attorney General Letitia James Pledges to Go After Trump.) Additionally, the National Enquirer is now in legal hot water over covering up salacious news about the President.
