New Brazil government to pull out of UN Migration Pact as “It doesn’t serve national interests”

President-elect Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil announced Monday that when his right-wing administration comes to power in January they will withdraw from the U.N. Migration pact.

“Immigration is welcome, but it should not be indiscriminate,” Ernesto Araujo, who will be the new foreign minister, tweeted, adding: “It must serve the national interests and cohesion of each society.” The UN pact is an “inappropriate instrument” for the “problem” of migration.

Brazil, Chile and the Dominican Republic are other Latin American countries to withdraw. The US and 14 other countries have pulled out or expressed concerns over national sovereignty with the pact.

The pact legalises migration as a human right thereby deprecating the term ‘illegal migrants’, and criminalises any criticism of migration as hate speech.

"Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces Col. Gen. Sergei Surovikin has set forward a task to organize preparations for returning back to home bases and to perform this task in line with the approved decision," a spokesperson said, TASS reported.

The Russian and Venezuelan pilots studied the flight area near Maiquetia airport and discussed interaction with flight controllers and radio communication terminology.

After that, Russia’s Tu-160 and Su-30, and Venezuela’s F-16 conducted a joint flight above the Caribbean Sea region, which lasted about ten hours in total.

Yellow vests will continue to protest until all demands are met – Leading activist

Yellow Vest lead activist said Thursday that the demonstrations will go ahead for this, the fifth weekend, until all their demands are met.

Priscillia Ludosky said during a press briefing in Versailles, as reported by France Info, “We, ‘gilets jaunes,’ demand a deep cut to taxes on essentials: energy, housing, food, clothes … and a significant cut to salaries, privileges, current and future pensions of senior state officials.”

The failing President Macron’s government has already cancelled the planned hike in diesel taxes, the issue that initially sparked the protests five weeks ago, but protests have grown to include more of the government’s policies and rising living costs.

In response to Monday’s promise by Macron to increase minimum wage and cancel the tax on low-income pensioners, the Yellow Vests state they will continue saying it is not enough.

No prison for adult migrant who raped young girl in Belgium

The 30-year-old rapist of a young girl in Belgium will not be locked up in prison, newspaper HLN reports. Instead he received a suspended sentence as he ‘has a clean record’.

A couple in Leuven was threatened by the African while they were making love on the stairs of the city’s townhall.

During the horrific attack, which occurred five years ago, the migrant assaulted the man and raped the girl at the same location.

The man rang the police and after they arrived the African was leaving the area. Forensic evidence showed the girl was indeed raped by the migrant.

But the court only gave the man a suspended sentence, as he had no previous convictions.

Yoga group shutters after cultural appropriation complaint

One student’s complaint of “cultural appropriation” led to the dissolution of a university’s Bhakti yoga group.

American University student Maya Krishnan filed a complaint with the President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion and wrote an op-ed in the student paper, The Eagle, after seeing a non-Indian group invited by American University’s Bhakti Yoga Club performing the Indian epic “The Ramayana,” according to ISKCON News.

“Having my culture represented by an almost entirely white troupe of dancers is incredibly frustrating."

The Bhakti Yoga Club’s faculty adviser, as well as its student president and vice president, all resigned from their posts amid backlash following the complaint and op-ed, rendering the group unrecognized by the university.

‘We’ll kill their children & women’: Fury over black S. African politician’s call to kill whites

South Africans are outraged after a recent speech by a local revolutionary socialist politician who called upon his followers to kill white people, including women, children, and even pets owned by whites.

Andile Mngxitama, the leader and founder of pan-Africanist political party Black First Land First (BLF), has been repeatedly heard using harsh language to criticize white people. But this time his comments seem to have gone way overboard.

Speaking at a rally in the city of Potchefstroom over the weekend he promised that “for every one black person we will kill five white people.” The politician was apparently referring to the infamous decades-long taxi wars in the country between taxi associations and individual minibus taxi drivers.

Official vows action after AP reports missing migrant girls

JAKARTA, Indonesia – An Indonesian official vowed on Friday to do more to combat human trafficking after an investigation by The Associated Press revealed that scores of trafficked girls have quietly disappeared from one of the nation's poorest regions.

Josef Nae Soi, the vice governor of East Nusa Tenggara province, said officials will work with police to try to find the missing girls cited in AP's report. He said officials also are strengthening checks at airports and seaports to block attempts by traffickers to smuggle migrant workers abroad. In the past two months, officials have rescued 386 people who were in the process of being smuggled, he said.

Soi's comments come one day after the AP revealed in a report that possibly hundreds of teenage girls have vanished from East Nusa Tenggara after falling prey to illegal recruiters promising well-paying jobs in neighboring Malaysia.

Spain's government has announced a plan to spend 7.3 billion euros ($8.2 billion) over the next 10 years on improving its military defense capabilities.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles said Friday the money will be used to build five new navy frigates and, in a first phase, develop and build 348 new armored personnel carriers. It will also enable the latest technological upgrades to be installed in its fleet of 69 Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft.

Warring sides in Yemen agree to truce in key port city

CAIRO (NYTIMES) - Yemen's warring parties have agreed to a ceasefire in the crucial port city of Hodeida, the United Nations chief said on Thursday (Dec 13), announcing the biggest step towards peace in years for a war that has produced the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels have agreed to withdraw their forces from Hodeida, the main conduit for humanitarian aid entering Yemen, and to implement a ceasefire in the surrounding province, Secretary-General António Guterres told reporters.

He made the announcement in Rimbo, Sweden, at the end of a week of negotiations intended to pave the way for full peace talks.

Amid smiles and handshakes, representatives from the two sides also agreed to implement a prisoner exchange involving as many as 15,000 people, and to allow a humanitarian corridor into Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city. They agreed to meet again in January.

US to Repatriate 1784 Clay Tablets of Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization (CHTHO) Ali Asghar Mounesan announced that the US will return 1784 clay tablets of Iran, adding that the permission has been issued by the US Treasury Department.

Mounesan made the remarks on Wednesday on the sideline of the 10th Pars Tourism Exhibition in Shiraz, Fars province.

The permission to repatriate these clay tablets which belong to Persepolis has been issued by US Treasury Department, he said.

The cargo was slated to be delivered in Iran but with the excuse of sanctions and the issues regarding the insurance, US officials told that Iran should receive the cargo in the United States, he noted, adding, “after all, we expect to receive the objects in the Hague.”

Highlighting that some 11,000 Persian relics are estimated to exist in Chicago University, Mounesan added, “It is said that the remaining objects will be repatriated in a three-year period but we did not accept and are negotiating to get them sooner.”

The tablets were discovered by the University of Chicago archaeologists in 1933 while they were excavating in Persepolis, the site of a major Oriental Institute excavation.
