Iran says missile program defensive, not up for negotiations

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the country's missile program is solely for defensive purposes and is not up for negotiations.

"First of all, Iran's missiles are for defense and we need them for deterrence. We use resources for military expenses far less than any country in the region and that’s why we have announced from the very beginning that our missiles are non-negotiable," Zarif said in an interview with the Doha-based Al Jazeera broadcaster on Saturday.

Zarif, who is in Qatar to attend the Doha Forum 2018, made the remarks in response to a question about US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's allegation in a post on his Twitter account on December 1, who claimed that Iran had "just test-fired a medium range ballistic missile" in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231.

Pompeo condemned as "growing" Tehran's "missile testing and missile proliferation," and called on the Islamic Republic to cease these activities.

UN Security Council Resolution 2231 enshrined the 2015 international nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), from which Washington has withdrawn under the pretext, among others, that it should have included Iran's missile program as well.

Under the deal, reached between Iran and six major powers – the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China, Tehran agreed to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions.

The Iranian foreign minister rejected the US claims against Tehran and said Washington had explicitly violated Resolution 2231 by pulling out from the JCPOA and was "not in a position to speak about that resolution."

Million Plus NJ Gun Owners Defy State Law, Refuse to Turn Over Banned Gun Mags

Over one million New Jersey Gun owners defy Governor Murphy’s gun magazine ban & turn in demands of what some estimate is easily more than ten million now illegal standard capacity gun mags.

New Jersey’s standard capacity magazine ban is now in effect making New Jersey’s one million gun owners criminals in the eyes of the state. But in an act of mass definace, New Jersey residents refuse to comply.

Any magazine holding more than ten rounds is now illegal in the Garden State. The standard magazine for an AR-15 holds 30 rounds. Glock 19s, which is the most popular pistol in the United States, holds 15 rounds. Anyone who is possession of larger magazine is committing a fourth-degree felony.

Anyone caught with one of the now banned magazines in their possession faces up to 18 months in prison and up to $10,000 in fines or both for each magazine found.

The bill was signed into law last June by Gov. Phil Murphy (D). Residents had until December 11th, 2018, to turn over magazines to police or sell or store them out of state.

Pro-gun groups sued New Jersey to try to prevent the law from going into effect. Their attempt on blocking the law failed in a federal appeals court. The three-judge panel ruled that a law limiting the number of rounds a magazine holds did not violate the US Constitution and did not put an undue burden on New Jersey gun owners.

Media Blackout After Trump Launches Urban Council To Invest $100 Billion in Black Communities

Remarks by President Trump at Signing of an Executive Order Establishing the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council

It’s been a busy few weeks in media land, what with Michael Cohen’s sentencing and talk about whether Donald Trump will be impeached, or Michael Flynn’s sentencing and talk about whether Donald Trump will be impeached, or Jamal Khashoggi’s death and how that relates to whether Donald Trump will be impeached.

Mind you, I’m not necessarily saying this isn’t newsworthy. While I don’t think the special counsel needs to be covered with a breathlessness usually reserved for the first few hours after a plane crash (except elongated to 24/7 status), there have been some pretty serious developments in the past few weeks that have changed the complexion of things.

That being said, this doesn’t give the media a pass on reporting other aspects of the Trump presidency — particularly those that might paint it in a favorable light.

For instance, you basically had to actively search to find any mention of the Opportunity and Revitalization Council, a $100 billion initiative to deliver growth in urban communities.

“With the creation of today’s council, the resources of the whole federal government will be leveraged to rebuild low-income and impoverished neighborhoods that have been ignored by Washington in years past,” the president said at

Super Injunction Silences News About Vatican Official's Child Molestation Conviction, And That's Bullshit

We've written in the past about things like "super injunctions" in the UK and elsewhere that often put a huge and near absolute gag order on writing about a famous person enmeshed in some sort of scandal, and apparently Australia has such a thing as well – and it's now scaring off tons of publications from writing about the fact that George Pell, the Vatican's CFO and often called the "3rd most powerful person in the Vatican" was convicted on all charges that he sexually molested choir boys in Australia in the 1990s. However, the press is barred from reporting on it based on one of those gag orders. The Herald Sun in Australia did post a brilliant, Streisand Effect-inducing front page display about how it was being censored from publishing an important story:

Front page of Thursday's edition of Australia's Herald Sun: "CENSORED"

"A statement to our readers…The world is reading a very important story that is relevant to Victorians. The Herald Sun is prevented from publishing details of this significant news." https://t.co/bzFOluucy9 pic.twitter.com/J0vSkBrB1g

— Oliver Darcy (@oliverdarcy) December 12, 2018

Though, if you click on the link in that tweet it now shows an error message reading Error 400 and "Content is deleted, expired or legal killed." Legal killed.

And here's the thing. Very few publications – even those outside of Australia – seem to be willing to pick up on the story. To their credit, the NY Post, owned by Australian Rupert Murdoch has posted about it as has Margaret Sullivan at the Washington Post, who included an impassioned plea for this kind of censorship to not be allowed to continue.

The secrecy surrounding the court case — and now the verdict — is offensive. That’s especially so because it echoes the secrecy that has always been so appalling a part of widespread sexual abuse by priests.

That has changed a great deal in recent years — in part because of the Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation in 2002 that broke open a global scandal and was the subject of the Oscar-winning film “Spotlight.” (Current Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron was executive editor at the Globe at that time.)

But clearly, it hasn’t changed entirely. And the news media shouldn’t be forced to be a part of keeping these destructive secrets.

Steven Spaner, Australia coordinator from the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests told the Daily Beast he felt frustrated and left “in the dark” because of the suppression of news about Pell.

“It’s hard to know if there are any shenanigans going on — things the church did that are illegal themselves,” he said. “There is always suspicion when you don’t know what is going on.”

Back-to-Back Midair Malfunctions Caused Navy SEAL Parachutist's Death: Investigation

A twist in a main parachute line, and an additional entanglement that prevented the deployment of a reserve parachute system at the correct altitude and time, caused a Navy SEAL to fall to his death in the Hudson River off New York City last year, according to investigation documents.

Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) 1st Class Remington J. Peters struck the Hudson near Liberty State Park, N.J., during New York Fleet Week on May 28, 2017 following back-to-back malfunctions that caused him to free fall invertedly and hampered successful deployment of his reserve chute, according to a command-directed investigation obtained by Military.com through the Freedom of Information Act.

A team of six jumpers, part of the Navy's elite Leap Frogs parachute team, were set to perform at 12:00 p.m – three as canopy performers and three as wingsuit maneuver performers. Peters was part of the three performing wingsuit maneuvers before deploying their parachutes, the documents show.

Peters, who had performed in more than 100 Leap Frog shows, had been with the demonstration team since February 2016. He was a skilled jumper, having completed more than 600 jumps with the team, including practice jumps, and about 300 civilian jumps, according to his qualification records. He had "completed this specific type of jump, 'wingsuit flocking-flying in proximity to other wingsuiters,' approximately 150 times," the records showed, and he was up to date on his medical and fitness tests.

During the fateful jump, the canopy jumpers went first, with Peters and two team members following minutes after, exiting from a CH-53 helicopter 8,500 feet above ground level. The team performed the wingsuit demonstration successfully before deploying their main parachutes at approximately 2,500 feet.

But Peters' main parachute deployed with "a line-twist malfunction above his break handles," the investigation stated.

"As per emergency action procedures, SO1 Peters attempted to clear the malfunction and unzipped his wing suit arms to further work the malfunction, all while monitoring his altimeter," the documents said.

Peters quickly determined that standard emergency procedures – which called for the jumper to attempt to first rotate out of the line twist – would force him to cut away his main chute if the malfunction could not be resolved. Peters had performed a similar cutaway on the 577th jump of his career with his own equipment.

But on this jump, Peters spent about 40 seconds working to untangle his line twist.

The decision to make a cutaway should occur at around 1,800 feet, with the cutaway itself occurring at 1,600 feet, according to procedures. But per Peters' "CYPRES [Cybernetic Parachute Release System] Automatic Activation Device and Ditter Altimeter data, SO1 Peters performed the main chute cutaway at 1,300 feet," the investigation said.
