Just because subgroups do not get along well, does not mean they won't work together for greater goals when the opportunity arises. In fact, there's an old Middle-Eastern saying that goes something like "me against my brother, my brother and I against my cousin, and all of us against the stranger". Constant infighting is actually a common trait for many cultures.
