Dem senator: Trump is 'clearly going after the rule of law'

Delaware Sen. Chris Coons (D) on Monday said that President Trump is "clearly going after the rule of law" by attacking the FBI and the Department of Justice over investigations into him.

“The president is clearly going after the rule of law and our criminal justice system. And he’s undermining it,” Coons said in an appearance on CNN's "New Day."

Coons took particular exception to a Trump tweet on Sunday saying it was "unthinkable & unheard of" for the FBI to raid Cohen's office in April, when agents for the bureau seized documents from Cohen's office and home.

"Remember, Michael Cohen only became a “Rat” after the FBI did something which was absolutely unthinkable & unheard of until the Witch Hunt was illegally started," Trump tweeted. "They BROKE INTO AN ATTORNEY’S OFFICE! Why didn’t they break into the DNC to get the Server, or Crooked’s office?"

Coons shot back at the assertion that the FBI "broke into an attorney's office."

"For the millions of people who follow closely what President Trump has to say on Twitter every day, the idea that the FBI broke into his attorney’s office runs right up against the foundation of our law," Coons added.

The FBI was executing a search warrant that had been approved following a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Coons on Monday said that the FBI "was executing a duly authorized warrant."

"Law enforcement — federal, state, local law enforcement — doesn’t just break into people’s offices," he said. "They were executing a warrant issued with the approval of a judge. This is part of how investigations work."

Coons also criticized Trump's characterization of the raid, saying that Trump sounds "more like a mob boss" than the president.

“His use of the term ‘rat’ for Michael Cohen and mischaracterizing this as a break-in into his attorney’s office frankly makes him sound more like a mob boss than the president of the United States," Coons said.

Fired leaker James Comey arrived for a second day of questioning from the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees.

Perhaps; but takes from the NYT concerning HRC’s candidacy are always suspect for me. And Comey testified in front of the Senate in March 2017 that part of it was about besting her and he had access to a lot more sensitive info than what’s out now.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) spoke with FOX and Friends on Monday morning before the hearing.

Jordan says he will ask Comey about his memos on President Trump.
