SOUTH BEND — With a potential end in sight to the six-year dispute over release of the police tapes, the case is now close to costing taxpayers $2 million from legal fees and related settlements.
Earlier this month, Superior Court Judge Steven Hostetler ordered Mayor Pete Buttigieg and the South Bend Common Council to resolve their dispute with the help of a mediator by the end of this year, saying, “the public and private interests involved in this case demand that the parties undertake an extraordinary effort to resolve these matters.”

SOUTH BEND — St. Joseph County Prosecutor Ken Cotter says he doesn't know why roughly 500 sexual assault kits dating back to the 1990s weren't sent to a state police lab for testing.
And Cotter said it's too early to say who is to blame for the long-standing problem, which was exposed by a recent state police audit. Compared to counties statewide, St. Joseph had the most kits that weren't tested for unknown reasons.
The problem has raised questions about whether justice for rape victims has been put on hold for years and if perpetrators might still be held accountable.

SOUTH BEND - Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Saturday welcomed an unexpected guest to the city: Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg launched two live Facebook videos from a car Saturday afternoon as Buttigieg drove through South Bend. They toured the city as Buttigieg explained its recent history, his background and how he ascended to the mayor's office. (See the videos here)

Initially I envisioned someone from AT&T giving a Tribune photographer and me a tour of the building at 301 and 307 S. Main St. But that idea was quickly quashed by Tamara Rader, AT&T media relations for Indiana.
“Our building houses some administrative offices and various electronic equipment,” Rader replied via email. “Unfortunately we’re unable to do a tour at this time.”

Notre Dame is launching an architecture design studio course with Tesla, the University announced in a press release Nov. 19.
The course centers on Tesla’s Gigafactory 1 in Reno, Nevada. According to the release, the factory is “the highest-volume battery production facility in the world.” Participants in the course will work with local government and study the movement of people and materials through the factory.
