Lemmie tell you a little bit about AIDS.
Parts of Africa had extremely high incidence of this disease long before it came to the NY gay scene. The virus that causes AIDS, HIV, is very similar to a virus that causes the same (but slightly milder) disease in green monkeys. Both viruses, SIV and HIV, are extremely mutagenic, meaning they mutate very easily.
The smallpox vaccine is a weakened virus (vaccinia) that is grown in green monkey kidney tissue. Since you can't clean the tissues of other viruses before use (the tissue must be 'alive' to propagate viruses) and we did not know about SIV or HIV at the time, it is highly likely that HIV was a) mutated form of SIV, and b) was inadvertently introduced to these African populations while WHO was vaccinating the entire population in its campaign to wipe out small pox.
Theory:

An alternative theory is that HIV came from infected chimpanzee blood to a single hunter who then spread it in the population. My counter argument to that is the extreme high incidence of this disease in some areas of Africa. It seems reasonable to assume a low incidence of general population infection with a disease that is only transmitted through body fluid exchange.

Other: Did the US government infect gays intentionally with this virus (hepatitis B vaccine?) I don’t know. It seems a singularly evil act if they did.
