It's more complicated than that. There was plenty of junk being pushed back then, which gave rise to FDA. The administrative state in general always teeters between capture by industry and state control, so that's a well known concept. Ironically Cass Sunstein is one of the most recognized legal experts in Administrative Law, but he's firmly on the dark side and was instrumental behind the scenes in crafting the ACA.
Again, it's more complicated than that. The deep state exists to some extent in every industry, in every global company. The key is finding out which ones and to what extent.
As to continued behind the scenes control of supposedly separate companies, well sure. They all run back to Rockefeller to some extent if you're in the US.
It's critical we understand there are patriots as well in every industry, in every company.
