Pretty sure the drone, if it's even there, is just an excuse. For some reason they want Gatwick closed.
One random association that came to mind today was the O'Hare UFO incident around 12 years ago. in retrospect, that might have been some kind of a 'drone' that the pilots saw. They said it left a perfectly circular hole in the clouds as it rose away from the runway.
