POTUS' belief is, if you want our military protection you pay for it. We won't play policeman. We will have the best equipment to kick ass if we need to but we won't get involved in constant wars. Those who have been said to be our allies are really our enemies. They have sucked us into every war since WW2. We don't need friends like that! Mattis didn't approve of Trump involving himself in the potential death penalty case of the Green Beret or creating Space Force. It seems right for Mattis to step away.
