Feds spent $1.5 billion on guns, ammo, tactical gear since 2010

The Government Accountability Office on Thursday released a report on recent purchases of firearms, ammunition and tactical equipment by federal law enforcement agencies.

The 86-page report focused on the weapons acquired by 20 diverse federal agencies ranging from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Inspector General to the FBI. What it found were that the agencies reported spending at least $38.8 million on firearms, $325.9 million on ammunition, and $1.14 billion on tactical equipment in the past eight years.

When it came to firearms, GAO found that semi-auto handguns were king among the guns bought by 18 reporting agencies, accounting for 69 percent of the 44,551 weapons purchased. The biggest single buyer was ATF, which acquired at least 8,500 firearms — mostly in large buys in 2012 and 2017 — while the smallest purchases were made by the Social Security’s OIG, who have bought 311 new guns for their 270 agents since 2010.

Of interest to wheelgun lovers will be the fact that at least three of the agencies — NPPD, ICE, and U.S. Secret Service — reported buying small numbers of revolvers recently, although they accounted for less than 1 percent of total purchases across the review. Other revolvers appeared on the existing inventory of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services OIG, the IRS, and ICE.

While the report held little information about numbers of select-fire weapons acquired, it did disclose that at least some purchases by eight agencies including the Secret Service, DEA, the Mint Police, and the Veterans Affairs Police were for fully-automatic rifles. Agencies with existing numbers of such weapons in their inventory included HHS’s OIG — which had 189 — the IRS and ICE. The National Institutes of Health, which has 83 law enforcement officers who protect and patrol their facilities, purchased an undisclosed number of submachine guns. Other small agencies, for example, HHS, reported that they had sub guns on hand “for familiarization.”

In some cases, the report found that the number of guns in an agency’s possession far outnumbered the number of certified law enforcement officers to carry them. “Six agencies reported having roughly a 2-to-1 or 3-to-1 pistol-to-officer ratio, while EPA OIG agents had a 5-to-1 ratio,” said the report. To account for the discrepancy, agencies advised unassigned guns were sometimes prepositioned to natural disaster response areas or maintained in sensitive areas for continuity of operations.

When it comes to the $325.9 million in ammunition bought by the agencies since 2010, CBP purchased the most — 429 million rounds. The smallest quantity, 846,000 rounds, was bought by the SSA’s OIG. The majority of the rounds were .40-caliber handgun cartridges. Shotgun shells accounted for only 3 percent of all purchases.

On tactical equipment, defined as a large category encompassing everything from riot helmets and shields to manned aircraft and vessels, 17 agencies spent $1.14 billion in the past eight years. Four of those — CBP, U.S. Marshals Service, FBI, and DEA — forked over the lion’ share. While some two-thirds of the funds went to aircraft, significant outlays were made on armored vehicles, camouflage uniforms, explosive devices, and the like. At least seven agencies recently purchased suppressors to include the National Park Service, ATF, and U.S Fish & Wildlife. The most common tactical equipment acquired were various aiming and imaging devices.

As part of their report, the GAO found that inventory controls on ammo and tactical equipment varied because “agencies generally did not consider these items to be as sensitive as firearms.”

In a recommendation, GAO suggested that ICE, which they found to sometimes have very different figures for purchases than what is publicly available due to other agencies piggy-backing on large ICE contracts, update their processes.

Netanyahu: We Will Increase Efforts Against Iran in Syria After U.S. Withdrawal

The Times of Israel reports: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday that Israel would step up its fight against Iran’s military presence in Syria, amid concerns that the US military’s announced pullout from the war-torn country would limit the Jewish state’s ability to operate there.

“We will continue to aggressively act against Iran’s efforts to entrench in Syria,” said Netanyahu, who also serves as Israel’s foreign minister and defense minister. “We do not plan to reduce our efforts. We will increase them, and I know that we will do this with the full support and backing from the United States of America,” he said, speaking at a trilateral summit in Beersheba with leaders from Greece and Cyprus.

Netanyahu also discussed the military’s operation to locate and destroy cross-border attack tunnels that Israel says the Hezbollah terror group dug from southern Lebanon.

Tony Podesta is running out of money and suing his clients for non-payment. One of his clients is counter suing him for non-performance

The Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta has been suing former clients over what he says are nearly half a million dollars in unpaid bills — some of it for work he claims was done after his firm collapsed and stopped paying employees.

The Podesta Group — an empty shell for more than a year after it imploded amid revelations about its work with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort — has sued 10 former clients in recent months, according to court records. They include name-brand companies such as SeaWorld as well as nonprofits such as Refugee Council USA and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

The suits show the lengths to which Podesta — one of the most prominent Democratic lobbyists in Washington before the collapse of his firm — is willing to go to scrape money out of what remains of his firm. Podesta, who accumulated a multi-million-dollar art collection during his flush years, has continued to live a high-flying lifestyle in the aftermath of his firm’s implosion, including recent trips to Venice, Florence, Rome and the French coast, according to his Facebook posts.

The suits claim the clients failed to pay their final bills or other fees owed to the firm. In some cases, the Podesta Group is trying to get paid for work it claims was done late last year after the firm told its lobbyists and most other employees they would stop getting paid.

At least one former client is fighting back.

Alabama police department says spike in crime is because young people have 'embraced Satan'

A police department in Alabama blamed a recent spike in crime for young people's lack of support for God.

The now-deleted post by the Opp Police Department on Tuesday linked a rise in murders to the idea that people are rejecting God and have now "embraced Satan."

"THESE MURDERS HAVE BEEN DONE BY OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. THIS IS HAPPENING BECAUSE WE HAVE TURNED AWAY FROM GOD AND EMBRACED SATAN," part of the post read. "WE MAY HAVE NOT MEANT TO DO SO BUT, WE HAVE. IT IS TIME TO ASK FOR GOD'S HELP TO STOP THIS."

The statement, which said five homicides had occurred in the county in 2018, followed two gunshot killings in Covington County on the Alabama-Florida line.

Sam Grover, an attorney for the Freedom From Religion group, said the message from the police department crossed the line between separation of church and state.

"The department has very directly endorsed one religious ideology to the exclusion of minority religions and atheism, and decried Satanism," he said in a statement. "Neither message is permissible."

You’re not quitting Facebook if you still use Instagram and WhatsApp

So you’ve decided you’ve had enough with Facebook and its continuing antics, or all the times it’s been hacked this year, or perhaps you’re just sick of how much time you spend on it. You’ve finally made the plunge to delete it from your life. And after all, between apps like Instagram and WhatsApp, you’ve got all the social media you need.

Sadly, I am here to burst your bubble, if you weren’t already aware: Instagram and WhatsApp are both run by Facebook.

While they’re theoretically separate companies, this year alone has seen the founders of both companies leave Facebook, with WhatsApp’s Jan Koum departure reportedly in protest of how Facebook has played fast and loose with its users’ data. Facebook has pushed the apps closer to its main network over the years, allowing users to connect the apps to their Facebook account, and even sharing data between services. Facebook has also offered advertisers the ability to reach Instagram and Facebook users with the same campaign.

To truly cut Facebook out of your life, as best you can, you’ll have to leave all the services it owns. Here’s our guide for deleting Facebook but making sure you keep all the photos you’ve added to it over the years. And here’s how to remove yourself from Facebook’s other big apps:

How to delete Instagram

Before you nuke your account, you’ll probably want to save all the photos you’ve posted over the years. To do that:

Go to instagram.com on a computer

Go to your profile page, and click on the gear icon

Click on “Privacy and Security”

Scroll down to “Data Download” and click

Make sure your email address is correct and click “Next”

Re-enter your password and click “Request Download”

You should get your photos in about 48 hours. Once you’ve got them and saved them somewhere safe (I’d recommend an external hard drive), then head over to this webpage to delete your account. You have to tell Instagram why you’re choosing to delete your account, then re-enter your password again, and then you can delete away.

A draft resolution calling for the declaration of war with Russia was introduced to the Ukrainian Parliament on December 21.

The full title of the document is “Draft Resolution on the appeal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine [Parliament] to the President of Ukraine regarding the declaration of war, the breakdown of diplomatic relations and the cessation of transport links with the Russian Federation”.

The document was introduced by a member of parliament Kupriy Nikolaevich.

It’s unclear when the Ukrainian Parliament is going to vote on the proposed declaration of war.

On December 20, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov revealed that the Kiev government is to stage a new provocation against Russia by sending another naval group with so-called “international observers” through the the Kerch Strait.

On December 19, a resolution was introduced in the US Senate called for a international freedom of navigation military operation in the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov.

Meanwhile, the US and other NATO member states have increased their intelligence activity across the Russian borders. Washington is also withdrawing combat-ready troops from Syria and Afghanistan. Some sources say that these forces could be needed for the US in case of participation in some “new” military conflict.
