Shutdown Negotiators Consider Major Restrictions On ICE’s Ability To Detain Illegals

As a part of the effort to end the partial government shutdown, Senate negotiators have floated drastic restrictions on the detention of criminal illegal aliens which would dramatically limit the number of illegals ICE could detain. A source close to the negotiations tells The Daily Caller that the Senate is discussing limiting bed space operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to only those illegal immigrants detained by the U.S. Border Patrol. The source noted that ICE rarely arrests illegal aliens for simply being in the country illegally and that it would significantly reduce the number of aliens that ICE could detain and deport. Homeland Security officials fear that the policy change would endanger states and localities who wish to cooperate with ICE in the transfer of criminal illegals. The source close to the process could not say what exactly these restrictions were being considered in exchange for by Republicans.

Former acting ICE Director Thomas Homan told TheDC the proposals were “absolutely ridiculous” and that in effect “every jail in the country would be a sanctuary jail.” Homan continued that local communities put criminal illegal aliens in jail because they are an obvious threat to their community and that such a change in ICE’s ability to operate would endanger public safety. “If I was a Republican this is not something I’d consider,” Homan declared. The former acting ICE director also continued, “If they want to give us less beds then we’re back to catch and release,” adding, these restrictions “would make matters worse.” The White House and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The White House is currently engaged in extensive negotiations with party leaders in Congress as President Donald Trump demands $5 billion in funding for a proposed barrier along the U.S. southern border before he will end the partial government shutdown. Vice President Mike Pence, acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, and other aides have been seen on Capitol Hill in recent days parlaying with legislators. Democratic congressional leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have declared that they will not appropriate a single dollar in taxpayer funds towards a border wall and are only willing to provide approximately $1.3 to 1.6 billion in “border security” funding.

Study: Mass Deportations Deter MS-13 Gang Expansion in U.S.

Mass deportations effectively deter the violent El Salvadoran MS-13 gang from expanding across the United States, an investigation finds. Research conducted by the State of New Jersey Commission of Investigation found that mass deportations of illegal aliens, which took place in the 1990s and 2000s, helped deter the expansion of the MS-13 gang across the U.S.

In the 1990s and through the 2000s, law enforcement sought to counter MS-13’s growing influence by enlisting U.S. immigration authorities to deport tens of thousands of immigrants who had been convicted of crimes in the United States [emphasis added]. The strategy proved a stopgap solution. While it initially diminished MS-13 in California, it exported the gang’s culture to Central America, where deep poverty and corruptible law enforcement agencies allowed the gang to flourish [emphasis added].

The study also notes that mass immigration to the U.S. — where more than 60 million immigrants have arrived since 1965 — helped the MS-13 gang grow in membership and size, now spanning across 40 states with more than 10,000 members. “Migration, both within the United States and from Central America to the United States, contributed to the gang’s spread through the 1990s and 2000s,” the report states. “MS-13 established beachheads in Texas, Charlotte, N.C., Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Long Island, and Massachusetts. Numerous cliques are now entrenched in these strongholds, fed by the recruitment of teens and young men.”

Other deterrents of the MS-13 gang exists. The research found that cooperation between the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and local law enforcement agencies — the opposite of sanctuary city laws — aid in arresting, prosecuting, and deporting violent MS-13 gang members. “Visible MS-13 activity in New Jersey has waned considerably in the past three years, the result of aggressive prosecutions at the state and federal levels and a close partnership with ICE,” the report notes. “Dozens of MS-13 members now sit in prison for crimes that include racketeering, conspiracy, and murder.” Most recently, six MS-13 gang members — four of whom are illegal aliens — were accused of butchering to death a 17-year-old Massachusetts boy. One of those MS-13 gang members successfully convinced an immigration judge that he was not affiliated with the gang.

Tie Wall Funding to Schumer’s Infrastructure Plan

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) says the House and Senate Republicans, as well as President Trump, ought to tie $25 billion in border wall funding to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) infrastructure plan. In an exclusive interview with SiriusXM Patriot’s Breitbart News Daily, Gosar said the GOP should hinge a massive, $29 billion New York infrastructure project — supported by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and Schumer — on fully funding Trump’s proposed border wall.

Governor Cuomo was in town two weeks ago yesterday … he removed his name from running in 2020 but he begged the president for the funding of the Gateway [Program] project. The big tunnel, the Hudson Tunnel up in New York. [Emphasis added] It’s estimated at $29 billion. And what my suggestion has been is put the $29 billion for the tunnel on the table along with $25 billion for the wall. And you say ‘Chuck, you’ve got one shot at this. If you don’t take it now, you are not going to get it for the next two years.’ [Emphasis added]

Gosar said: Gosar said he has suggested his plan to Trump and GOP leadership as just one route the White House can take to secure all border wall funding that would fully finance the southern border project. The U.S. Senate has yet to hold a vote on the spending measure that includes $5.7 billion in no-strings-attached border wall funding — which could finance hundreds of miles of border wall projects — forcing a portion of the federal government to shut down.

Hungary Hits Back at FT: Soros an ‘Enemy of Democracy’, Not ‘Person of the Year’

The Hungarian government has hit out at the Financial Times naming George Soros their “Person of the Year”. The famous salmon-coloured newspaper, something of a house magazine for the British establishment and financial elite, praised the billionaire currency speculator and convicted insider trader as “the standard bearer of liberal democracy and open society”.

Hungary’s conservative-populist government, which shares a mutual antipathy with the 88-year-old plutocrat on the subject of mass migration — opposed by Budapest, encouraged by Soros — has offered an assessment very much to the contrary, observing: “To the Financial Times, he’s Person of the Year, but to many ordinary citizens, Soros is an enemy of their democracy.”

“To the FT, Soros is a philanthropist, period… the charitable, selfless kind,” wrote government spokesman Dr Zoltán Kovács, describing the financier as the newspaper’s “Achilles’ heel”. “The FT and much of the liberal, mainstream media just cannot talk in any depth about Soros as the ambitious political actor that he is, a man with an ideologically-driven agenda who puts money behind people and causes that are highly political in nature. He talks and writes candidly himself about his political schemes, plots for which he has zero political mandate,” the Hungarian observed. “The irony here? The ‘standard bearer of liberal democracy’ funds political movements to undermine democratically elected governments and decisions – like Brexit – taken by popular referendum.” It is true that Soros, a Hungarian-born American citizen, has indeed ploughed hundreds of thousands of pounds into the movement to overturn Brexit, and facilitated meetings between powerful EU loyalist politicians and party donors from both the governing Tory party and the Labour opposition at his Chelsea mansion.

Kovács also raised the “tens of millions of [United States Dollars]” which Soros spend “lobbying the U.S. government against Hungary” in 2017, and similar efforts in the EU capital of Brussels. “Soros and the NGOs that rely on his funding for survival continue to back a radical, open borders, pro-immigration agenda at a time when the migration crisis is putting difficult strains on states to protect Europe’s borders and posing serious security concerns. That stands in stark opposition to what the citizens of Hungary – and those of many European countries – want,” he warned. “I could list many other examples… his ideological zeal to push for an open society that seeks to undermine national sovereignty and run roughshod over the will of the citizens knows no boundaries.”
