Microsoft and Mastercard create digital identities sparking fears of 'mass surveillance'

MICROSOFT and Mastercard have announced a plan to create “digital identities” which could be the forerunner to governments around the world keeping tabs on the population.

Mastercard announced a new partnership with Microsoft via Twitter about its plan.

It said: “Voting, driving, applying for a job, renting a home, getting married and boarding a plane: what do these all have in common? You need to prove your identity.

“In partnership with Microsoft, we are working to create a universally-recognised digital identity.”

While these intimate details may be useful for companies in order to market new products, there is concern the information could be misused.

Richard Skellett, a founder of Digital Anthropologist and an expert for Future of Work, said people’s intimate online data has become a sellable asset and warns people to be more careful about who they share their data with.

“Many governments around the world would like to have affordable ID tracking and some are implementing those today and who is funding it. It’s concerning that Microsoft and Mastercard could fund ID programmes on behalf of the UK government and others around the world on the basis of a secure ID sales pitch to consumers.”

The “digital identity” is essentially streamlined identification.

Chinese trade with North Korea drops by over 50 per cent despite thaw in relations

China’s trade with North Korea shrank 52.9 per cent to US$2.2 billion in the period from January to November compared with the previous year, Reuters reported on Sunday.

Citing Chinese customs data, the report said imports from North Korea fell by 88.6 per cent to US$191.75 million in the period, while exports to North Korea dropped 33 per cent to US$2.01 billion.

The data showed that trade flows between the two communist neighbours had continued to slide after a 10.5 per cent drop in 2017 despite the easing of tensions on the Korean peninsula and a thaw in relations between Beijing and Pyongyang.

Afghanistan's Ghani replaces top security chiefs

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday replaced two of the country's top security chiefs with staunch anti-Taliban officials, in a major shake-up days after US President Donald Trump's decision to slash troop numbers in the country.

Amrullah Saleh and Assadullah Khaled, both former heads of the Afghan intelligence agency, have been appointed to the critical posts of interior minister and defence minister, respectively, a presidential decree said.

There was no official explanation for the sudden reshuffle.

But it comes four months after Mr Ghani rejected the resignations of former interior minister Wais Ahmad Barmak and defence minister Tariq Shah Bahrami following criticism over an increasingly deadly insurgency.

President Trump not going to change mind on Syria, even after resignations: Mulvaney

Incoming acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said Sunday that President Trump is not going to change his mind about withdrawing troops from Syria, even after both his secretary of defense and top U.S. diplomat for the campaign to defeat ISIS resigned because of it.

"Is there any chance the president changes his mind about this and reverses course?" ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl asked Mulvaney in an interview on "This Week."

"No, I think the president has told people from the very beginning that he doesn't want us to stay in Syria forever. You're seeing the end result now of two years worth of work," he said. Mulvaney is replacing John Kelly as chief of staff in the new year. Mulvaney has previously served as the director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Afghan President names two former spy chiefs to key posts

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Ashraf Ghani named two former heads of the intelligence services to key security posts in his government on Sunday in a step that could affect both next year’s presidential election and moves toward peace with the Taliban.

Asadullah Khalid, who suffered horrific injuries in a Taliban suicide attack shortly after taking over the National Directorate for Security in 2012, was named as acting defense minister. Amrullah Saleh, who served as NDS chief until 2008, was appointed acting interior minister.

Both men, veterans of decades of conflict in Afghanistan, have been uncompromising opponents of the Taliban and of Pakistan, which they accuse of supporting the insurgency, but both have also been at times strongly critical of Ghani.
