Mankind has a proven track record of not being able to reliably regulate a large complex society. In fact, the record indicates quite the opposite–and with lots of corruption and genocide to boot!
From the perspective of modern computational complexity, centrally governing/regulating/managing/shaping/influencing a nation the size of the US is a virtual mathematical impossibility–or perhaps more accurately a matter of "blind luck" so astounding as to be nothing short of a miracle.
The only practical option for social endurance is to ensure that power and decision making remain as distributed as possible. The only way to ensure this is to have a wide, private distribution of viable military weaponry… And it is also the only way to keep a check on centralized corruption… And it is also the most practical way to ensure individual, inalienable, God-given rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
Do you think the 1780's private citizenry had better and more, or inferior and less, guns than the government?
