The Sabbath

Mark 2

23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the

ears of corn. 24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? 25 And he said unto

them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? 26 How he went into the

house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and

gave also to them which were with him? 27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Matthew 12

1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn,

and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the

sabbath day. 3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; 4 How he

entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him,

but only for the priests? 5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath,

and are blameless? 6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. 7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I

will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: 10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they

asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. 11 And he said unto them, What man shall there

be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. 13 Then saith he to the man,

Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. 14 Then the Pharisees went out, and

held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

The Law

1 Corinthians 9

19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. 20 And unto the Jews I

became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under

the law; 21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might

gain them that are without law. 22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I

might by all means save some. 23 And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

Galatians 3

19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and

it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. 21 Is the law then

against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should

have been by the law. 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to

them that believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come,

we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have

been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male

nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the

promise.

Matthew 5

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you,

Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore

shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but

whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your

righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mark 12

28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him,

Which is the first commandment of all? 29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God

is one Lord: 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy

strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none

other commandment greater than these. 32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and

there is none other but he: 33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all

the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. 34 And when Jesus saw that he

answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

Luke 20

45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, 46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and

love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; 47 Which devour widows' houses,

and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
