Macron knocks Trump’s Syria decision: ‘An ally should be dependable’
French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday criticized President Trump over his decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria, saying that "an ally should be dependable."
Macron added that fighting "shoulder to shoulder" is the "most important thing for a head of state."
“I very deeply regret the decision made on Syria,” Macron said during a news conference, according to Reuters.
“To be allies is to fight shoulder to shoulder. It’s the most important thing for a head of state and head of the military," he added. "An ally should be dependable.”
Macron also emphasized that Kurdish forces in Syria, whom the U.S. forces have supported, have done important work, Reuters reported.
“I call on everyone … not to forget what we owe them,” he said.
Trump last week announced that the U.S. would withdraw its troops from Syria, fulfilling a pledge he had made for years. In doing so, Trump declared that the U.S. has defeated the Islamic State (ISIS) in the region.
Trump's move was met with bipartisan criticism from lawmakers, who have said that ISIS has not yet been defeated.
