WASHINGTON–Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, made the following comments after the Committee passed the waiver to allow retired Gen. James Mattis to serve as Secretary of Defense:

"Extraordinary times call for extraordinary leaders. That is why the Committee approved the exception that allows General Mattis to serve as Secretary of Defense. Ensuring there is no gap in the office is important to the safety and security of the United States. I have no doubt that the nation stands to benefit, once again, from the service of this extraordinary leader, thinker, and public servant."

huh? That's a post confirming that POTUS' pick of Mattis, before he'd been in civilian status for the statutorily required 7 years, was appropriately approved (waiver) by the House Armed Services Committee. (Hussein fired him in 2013.)

What's your point, anon? Presidential terms of office have begun and ended on Jan. 20th (Inauguration Day) since 1937, when the 20th Amendment was ratified.

Section 1. The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin.
