The hand wringing merchant prototype has been around for some time, it seems. This is a page from the 1947 book, The Rocket's Shadow, the first in the Rick Brant Electronic Adventures series of books for boys, modeled somewhat on the Hardy Boys series, but with more tech and post WW2/cold war intrigue interwoven into the plots. The cartoon series Jonny Quest was inspired by the Rick Brant series of books.
