When the millionaire John Jacob Astor IV helped his wife, the 18-year-old socialite Madeleine Talmage Force, onto a lifeboat as the Titanic began to sink on April 14, 1912, he was wearing his dinner suit, complete with his favorite personalized pocket watch. He was later seen smoking a cigarette as the ship began to list.
A pregnant Madeleine survived the sinking, as did her yet-to-be born son. Astor did not. He was the wealthiest and most famous of the more than 1,500 passengers and crew who died that night. When his body was found floating in the North Atlantic days later it was still clothed in the jacket that had his initials sewn into a pocket, with the watch still attached.
