New Knowledge DIGG, con't.
Hamilton 68: Still used to track fake Russian bots & "pro-Kremlim" groups
In a new video (>>4456104), YT host Tim Pool talks about the NYT article about simulating Russian bots to influence a recent Alabama election (see Q 2635).
But he adds something new to the mix: the influential role of Hamilton 68.
Hamilton 68 is a website launched In Aug. 2017 by Clint Watts. Purpose: to track Russian propaganda."in near-real time, as it spreads via Twitter accounts that have been linked to Russian influence operations." The name is a nod to Alexander Hamilton and Federalist Paper #68, which focuses on protecting our electoral process from foreign interference.
Hamilton 68 comes up in Pool's video because the head of New Knowledge, Jonathon Morgan, made the claim just last year that "Russian trolls, trapped by #Hamilton68, are taking an interest in the Alabama Senate race." So Morgan clearly buys into the Hamilton 68 narrative.
Watts claims that Hamilton 68 tracks 600 Russian bots plus news accounts that push the "Kremlin narrative." But the list of bots is secret (can't be checked out); and the people it tracks are conservatives.
Although Zerohedge, Fortune, and The Columbia Journalism Review now consider its algorithm bogus, H68 is still widely used to bolster fake claims about Russian influence and the negative influence of conservative groups (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-07-18/cnn-uses-discredited-hamilton-68-website-claim-walkaway-campaign-hijacked-russian).
Pool had no trouble finding articles that use the H68 algorithm to justify their conclusions:
Rolling Stone: "Release the Memo: What's the Conspiracy Behind the Right-Wing Meme?"
Snopes: "Fake News and Bots Target Author of Democratic Memo"
Quartz: "Russian Trolls and Bots are Flodding Twitter with Ford-Kavanaugh Disinformation"
Mother Jones: "After Russia Attacked Ikrainian Ships, These Twitter Accounts Joined the Battle"
Haaretz: "How Putin and the Far Right Played the Paris Yellow Vests Protests"
But there's no real science here, just propaganda dressed up to LOOK like science. Pool concludes that the object of the New Knowledge study was simply to smear Republicans. The pseudo-scientific H68 justified what would otherwise be a non-story.
