Gold has value digital, and paper do not. They are fiat currencies.
Gold backed money simply means they is a weighted value to the money.
Originally most currency was actual coins made of precious metals though now mostly they are zinc instead of silver/nickel.

In Oregon, plenty to mine here still it just got started when the mines were shut down for WWII.

Most miners don't realize that there are deposits of platinum along with gold in many areas (silver as well).
