Italy's Mount Etna erupts, authorities close airport

CATANIA, Italy (Reuters) - Italy’s Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano, erupted on Monday, sending a huge column of ash into the sky and causing the closure of Catania airport on Sicily’s eastern coast.

A chain of around 130 earth tremors have rocked the volcano since around 0800 GMT on Monday, Italy’s National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology said, with the strongest posting a magnitude of 4.0. There were no reports of any injuries.

The 3,330 meter high volcano can burst into spectacular action several times a year, spewing lava and ash high over the Mediterranean island. The last major eruption was in 1992.

Trump Signs Bill Naming Post Office After Slain Solider Whose Parents Spoke At DNC

President Donald Trump signed a bill that names a post office after Capt. Humayun Khan, a Muslim solider who was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq. The law changes the name of a U.S. Postal Service facility in Charlottesville, Virginia, to the Captain Humayun Khan Post Office. Before it landed on Trump’s desk, the bill enjoyed widespread support from both parties. First introduced by Virginia Republican Rep. Tom Garrett, it received unanimous consent in both chambers.

Virginia Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, both Democrats, praised the law. “With the dedication of this post office, we’re showing the Khan family that we’re forever grateful for his service and sacrifice for our country,” the two senators said in a joint statement.

Humayan, a 27-year-old U.S. Army officer at the time, was killed June 8, 2004, when a vehicle containing explosives drove into his compound. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Twelve years later, Humayun became a household name when his parents, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, were keynote speakers at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. His father teared into then-candidate Trump for his comments about Muslims, and accused the Republican presidential nominee of “sacrificing nothing and no one.”

“If it was up to Donald Trump, [my son] never would have been in America. Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims,” Khizr said in his 2016 speech. “He disrespects other minorities — women, judges, even his own party leadership. He vows to build walls and ban us from this country.” Trump responded at the time, openly wondering if Khizr’s wife, who stood beside him during the speech but said nothing, didn’t speak because she wasn’t “allowed.” Trump’s campaign later walked back criticism of the Gold Star family, maintaining Humayan is “a hero to our country.”

After his DNC address, Khizr continued to play a role in Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic Party. A Clinton presidential campaign ad that ran in key battleground states featured Khizr, during which he asked Trump if his son would “have a place in your America.” The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee later invoked the Gold Star father’s name in 2017 when soliciting campaign donations. Khizr returned to the spotlight in early 2018 when he spoke out against Trump’s attempt to restrict travel from a number of Muslim-majority countries.

JFK Had A Reassuring Message To A Little Girl About Santa’s Safety During The Cold War

Former president John F. Kennedy once reassured a young girl that Santa Claus was going to be just fine after she overheard her parents talking about Russia testing nuclear bombs at the North Pole.

Eight-year-old Michelle Rochon wrote a letter to Kennedy in 1961 during the height of the Cold War pleading with him to stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole. “Dear Mr. Kennedy,” she wrote. “Please stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole because they will kill Santa Claus. I am 8 years old. I am in the third grade at Holy Cross School.” Rochon explained her distress to CBC decades later, saying she knew nuclear bombs were bad. What was Santa going to do if they were being aimed at the North Pole? Rochon received a phone call a week after she mailed Kennedy her letter from a local radio station asking to interview her. The White House had just issued a picture of the president reading her letter and assuring her of Santa’s safety.

Dear Michelle,” Kennedy’s letter read. “I was glad to get your letter about trying to stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole and risking the life of Santa Claus.” “I share your concern about the atmospheric testing of the Soviet Union, not only for the North Pole but for countries throughout the world; not only for Santa Claus but for people throughout the world,” the president continued. “However, you must not worry about Santa Claus. I talked with him yesterday and he is fine. He will be making his rounds again this Christmas.”

Rochon recalled to CBC being overjoyed the president spoke with Santa and he’d still be delivering his toys all around the world.

President Donald Trump took a different approach regarding Santa and young children Monday when he asked a 7-year-old if he still believes in Santa. “Hello, is this Coleman? Merry Christmas. How are you? How old are you … Are you doing well in school? Are you still a believer in Santa? ‘Cause at 7, it’s marginal right?” Trump asked during his call on the NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) Santa tracking hotline. First lady Melania Trump noted on Twitter following the event that answering children’s calls about Santa on Christmas Eve is becoming one of her favorite White House traditions.
