Another (scientific) point to make. Anywhere there was volcanic activity in the past there is a possibility for gold or other precious metals.

Hydrothermal volcanic events push the gold up, faults and fractures help to expose.

 

Lode gold is found where carrier materials (quartz most commonly) have cooled with gold embedded.

Placer gold is the gold eroded from lodes and placed in deposits above ground.
