Bartering is not always practical - thus, why something like precious metals is needed.

I have lots of milk from my cows.

You have lots of eggs from your chickens.

You want milk, but I don't want eggs.

You give me gold for my milk and I buy what I need - hay.

That's ridiculous.

If someone has tomatoes about to go bad in a few days,

they would gladly take gold for them today. Then they can go buy something from someone who hates tomatoes for their gold instead of a tomato.

It is more complex than you write. People don't always want EXACTLY what a person has for sale.

Bankers and stock brokers HATE people buying gold, and they are indoctrinated heavily to

think and say that "you can't eat gold". They want your money to play with, and they can't do that if you hold your own.

Then keep your paper money in the bank and have fun eating your paper, if you can even get it out of the bank.

I will keep my gold in my home and we will see who survives better.

Me and my shiny beautiful gold or you and your filthy paper money.

To each his own.
