Consider that the Vatican and Church as a whole is largely worshipping Zeus. An arbitrary form of external laws and commands. Not that all of these commands are bad per se - they would certainly be designed to protect society and preserve its function, but for the purpose of having a pliant labor force.

Now - you have groups outside of that who are of old traditions. You also have the hermetic styles of belief - Taoism, for example, which run against this arbitrary obedience principle.

So… You already have a group using the Vatican for ritual sacrifice… Dress them up in various symbols of the hermetic philosophies, and then send them out to say "we are about individualism" while lauding the devil and rituals of sacrifice that most people reel away from.

This gets people to associate many different things outside of Church doctrine with devil worship and vile/evil practices. IE "some light exists to cast shadows."
