'With almost $22 trillion of debt, the US is in no position to attack Iran'
The US is trying to send a message to Tehran, with its aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, that even though it is leaving Syria, this doesn’t mean lifting any pressure on Iran, professor of political science Hamed Mousavi said.
A US aircraft carrier entered the Persian Gulf for the first time since 2001 last week accompanied by a fleet of warships in what Washington is calling a “show of force” against Iran.
Tehran is now threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz, the only exit from the Gulf, where a third of all oil trade passes through.
It comes amid rising tensions between Iran and the US after Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement and reinstated anti-Tehran sanctions.
US boosts number of high-precision weapons in sea waters surrounding Russia – Navy chief
The US has been increasing the number of its strategic non-nuclear high-precision systems in sea waters surrounding Russia, Navy Commander Adm. Vladimir Korolyov has said. The Russian Navy will have its presence in international waters in 2019 set against a background of a “sharp increase in the intensity of operative and combat preparations” by US and NATO near Russian borders, the deployment of sea-based missile shield elements, non-nuclear systems of high-precision weaponry and military infrastructure in sea waters adjacent to the Russian territory, he told Krasnaya Zvezda daily in an interview published on Wednesday. The Russian military presence next year will “rule out all threats from coming from seas and oceans,” he said, adding that at present, “about 100 warships and other vessels of the Russian Navy” are performing their duties at sea.

Second child dies in custody – US immigration authorities
An eight-year-old boy from Guatemala has died at a detention facility on Tuesday night, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection has confirmed. This is the second immigrant child this month to die in custody.
The agency said that the boy had shown “signs of potential illness” Monday and was diagnosed with cold and fever in a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where he and his father were taken. He was given medication and released, only to return that evening with nausea and vomiting.
He died after midnight on Tuesday. CBP officials have said the cause of the death is not yet known and promised “an independent and thorough review of the circumstances”.
A seven-year-old Guatemalan girl Jakelin Caal died in US border patrol custody, shortly after being detained in early December.
The child had seizures and a fever, and was flown to the hospital, where she went into cardiac arrest and died. Dehydration, septic shock and fever were said to be the likely causes of her death. Caal's remains were then returned to her family’s remote village in Guatemala.
