Immune system transplants from strangers on horizon to fight cancer

Scientists have discovered a breakthrough treatment to fight cancer, as they claim the disease will no longer be deadly for future generations.

Researchers at the Francis Crick Institute in London believe it is possible to strengthen the body's defences by transplanting immune cells from strangers.

Patients will begin to receive the new treatment next year, and the team now wants to establish ‘immune banks’ to store disease-fighting cells.

Immunology expert Professor Adrian Hayday, group leader of the Immunosurveillance Lab at The Crick, said scientists and doctors could become more like engineers, upgrading the body rather than bombarding it with toxic chemotherapy.

Broward County to change active shooter protocol after Parkland shooting

The policy changes include altering language in what is expected of deputies in active shooting situations to indicate they "shall" attempt to enter the scene and intervene rather than "may," according to an internal memo by Sheriff Scott Israel to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, who is the chair of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission. The letter was obtained by the Miami Herald.

"The use of the word 'may' in the BSO policy is ambiguous and does not unequivocally convey the expectation that deputies are expected to immediately enter an active assailant scene where gunfire is active and neutralize the threat," the commission wrote in a draft report of its conclusions released earlier in December.

Under the new policy, which goes into effect Jan. 4, deputies responding to an active shooting "shall attempt to protect the life of innocent persons through immediate tactical intervention to eliminate the threat."

Qatar airlifts 24 armored vehicles to Mali to ‘help Sahel region combat terrorism’

Qatar has airlifted 24 armored vehicles to Mali, in a move it said would help the countries of the African Sahel region combat terrorism. Military planes delivered the vehicles, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said, adding the shipment would help establish security not only in Mali but also in the African Sahel countries. The G5 of Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mauritania last year created a military task force to root out jihadist violence. Qatar has increased efforts to show it is a force for good in international security since its Gulf Arab neighbors imposed a diplomatic and economic boycott on it in June 2017, accusing it of supporting terrorism, Reuters said.

Damascus must take over E. Syria after US troops withdrawal – Moscow

Moscow expects the Syrian government to take over the areas where the US troops are currently deployed following their withdrawal, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday. The withdrawal of the US troops does not translate to the end of activity by the US-led coalition, she noted. “Who will inherit control over the territories vacated by the Americans? Obviously, that should be the Syrian government, in accordance with international law,” Zakharova said. “However, right now we have no information on contacts between Washington and Damascus on the issue.” Any positive changes in Syria can only yield a long-term positive effect if they are reinforced by substantial progress “on the political settlement track based on respect for Syria’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty,” she noted.
