Reading MKULTRA testimony "very carefully," and a name stuck out - Cardinal Mindszenty. This guy was caught between world wars, arrested and tortured, spends 15 years stuck in a European embassy (that sounds vaguely familiar….), is betrayed by political leaders of ALL stripes as the years go on - then eventually by the Pope himself.

It's a great read about another Cold War figure, and a couple movies based on his life to watch if nothing else.

"Cardinal Mindszenty was fast becoming a Cold War cult figure for his valiant stand against atheistic communism. He was featured on the February 14th, 1949 cover of Time magazine, which had been a steadfast opponent of communism and fascism. A priest suffering torture for the faith might not have been a popular subject among Hollywood’s elite but it resonated well at the box office, especially with millions of Catholics who loved to go to the movies."
