Iraqi Lawmakers Demand US Withdrawal After Trump Visit

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi lawmakers Thursday demanded U.S. forces leave the country in the wake of a surprise visit by President Donald Trump that politicians denounced as arrogant and a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

Politicians from both blocs of Iraq's divided Parliament called for a vote to expel U.S. troops and promised to schedule an extraordinary session to debate the matter.

"Parliament must clearly and urgently express its view about the ongoing American violations of Iraqi sovereignty," said Salam al-Shimiri, a lawmaker loyal to the populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Trump, making his first presidential visit to troops in a troubled region Wednesday, said he has no plans to withdraw the 5,200 U.S. forces in the country.

China jails for life former top secret police official

BEIJING: A Chinese court on Thursday jailed for life a former high-ranking secret police official for taking bribes, "coercive" business deals and insider trading, the court said.

Ma Jian, once a vice minister at the Ministry of State Security, is one of the most senior security officials to be jailed since the former domestic security tsar Zhou Yongkang was ensnared in a graft scandal and jailed for life in 2015.

Ma's case is linked to that of China's most wanted fugitive, exiled tycoon Guo Wengui, who lives in New York and has courted international attention with his explosive claims about the leadership of the ruling Communist Party.

The Dalian Intermediate People's Court said in a statement on its website that it had reached the verdict on the grounds that Ma had taken a "particularly enormous" amount of bribes, and that his collaboration with Guo's company were "particularly serious".

Banishing Truth

The investigative reporter Seymour Hersh, in his memoir “Reporter,” describes a moment when as a young reporter he overheard a Chicago cop admit to murdering an African-American man. The murdered man had been falsely described by police as a robbery suspect who had been shot while trying to avoid arrest. Hersh frantically called his editor to ask what to do.

“The editor urged me to do nothing,” he writes. “It would be my word versus that of all the cops involved, and all would accuse me of lying. The message was clear: I did not have a story. But of course I did.” He describes himself as “full of despair at my weakness and the weakness of a profession that dealt so easily with compromise and self-censorship.”

Hersh, the greatest investigative reporter of his generation, uncovered the U.S. military’s chemical weapons program, which used thousands of soldiers and volunteers, including pacifists from the Seventh-day Adventist Church, as unwitting human guinea pigs to measure the impact of biological agents including tularemia, yellow fever, Rift Valley fever and the plague. He broke the story of the My Lai massacre. He exposed Henry Kissinger’s wiretapping of his closest aides at the National Security Council (NSC) and journalists, the CIA’s funding of violent extremist groups to overthrow the Chilean President Salvador Allende, the CIA’s spying on domestic dissidents within the United States, the sadistic torture practices at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by American soldiers and contractors and the lies told by the Obama administration about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Yet he begins his memoir by the candid admission, familiar to any reporter, that there are crimes and events committed by the powerful you never write about, at least if you want to keep your job. One of his laments in the book is his decision not to follow up on a report he received that disgraced President Richard Nixon had hit his wife, Pat, and she had ended up in an emergency room in California.

What happened to the five Sodder children?

The prominent Sodder family was told five of their children died in a fire on Christmas Eve, 1945. A series of clues offered a more sinister possibility.

As with in most loving families, Christmas was a busy time for the Sodder family.

Nine of the prominent West Virginia family’s 10 children were at home for the celebration, and eldest sister Marion, 17, had just surprised her three younger sisters with toys she’d brought home for them from her dime store job. It was 10pm on Christmas Eve, 1945, and the young children negotiated a later bedtime so they could continue playing with these new acquisitions.

Pharma CEO to plead guilty to bribing doctors to prescribe powerful opioid

Dec. 26 (UPI) – The former CEO of a drug company that produced an opioid painkiller agreed to plead guilty to bribing doctors to prescribe the drug, court documents filed Wednesday stated.

Michael Babich, a former president and CEO of Insys Therapeutics Inc., will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of mail fraud for his role in organizing and issuing the bribes for doctors to prescribe patients with the company's drug Subsys, according to the documents.

"It was part of the conspiracy that the defendant and his co-conspirators intentionally bribed and provided kickbacks to practitioners in order to increase Subsys sales," the documents said.

Babich and other Insys executives were accused of defrauding insurance companies through the bribes, as insurance providers made payments to doctors without knowledge of the payments.

Election delays in DRC leads to protests

Dec. 27 (UPI) – Protests erupted Thursday in the Democratic Republic of Congo after the country's electoral commission postponed Sunday's presidential and parliamentary polls in three cities.

The electoral commission, called CENI, said that while voting will go on as scheduled Sunday for the rest of the nation, elections in Beni and Butembo in the eastern North Kivu province, and Yumbi in western Bandundu province will take place in March, broadcaster Al Jazeera reported.

The commission pointed to concerns connected with an Ebola outbreak, as well as ethnic violence. More than 320 people have been killed in the latest Ebola outbreak since August, mostly in the eastern portion of the country. In the western region, at least 100 people died in ethnic conflicts last week.

Florida Teacher Diane Tirado Was Fired For Giving Zeros To Students That Failed To Hand In Their Work

An eighth-grade teacher in Florida has gone on the offensive against her former school after she claimed to have been fired for doling out “zero” grades to students who failed to hand in their homework.

Social studies teacher Diane Tirado, 52, was fired from West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie in south Florida after she had been working there for just two months.

Apparently, the school employs a “no zero” policy that Tirado is said to have violated after a group of students failed to hand in one of their first major assignments of the school year. This resulted in Tirado’s forced departure.

The assignment that ended Tirado’s career called for the students to keep an “explorer’s notebook” for two weeks in the same way a 15th-century explorer might have kept a journal in their time.

Diane Tirado claims that parents complained to her over the workloads that their kids received and criticized the teacher of 17 years for giving the eighth graders too much to handle.

Trump is Stopping the United Nations from Becoming the Single World Government US president is standing in the way of the UN plan to be a one world govt

As other world leaders continue to push for globalism, steering the world down the path to a single global government, US President Donald Trump remains defiant. In a seemingly lone battle, aside from outsiders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump seems to be the only leader with a prominent seat at the table who is standing in the way of the United Nations becoming a single world government. While addressing the UN in September, Donald Trump urged other nations to reject globalism and embrace patriotism. His speech to the United Nations, however, was interrupted by derisive laughter from other world leaders. In the course of his bold address, Trump highlighted the achievements of his presidency, slammed America’s enemies – Iran foremost among them – and railed against globalism in its spiritual home, the UN general assembly (UNGA).“America is governed by Americans,” Trump said.

“We reject the ideology of globalism and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism.” The main theme of Trump’s speech was patriotism, and he urged states to focus on their own national interests. He said: “Around the world, responsible nations must defend against threats to sovereignty not just from global governance, but also from other, new forms of coercion and domination.” The French president, Emmanuel Macron, cemented his role as the anti-Trump on the world stage.
