TRUMP DOESN'T BELIEVE IN WHAT AMERICA STANDS FOR | LAST WORD 12/26 | MSNBC | 19:39

<Ari Melber

>POTUS and FLOTUS makes first EVER surprise visit to a war zone; Iraq and Germany on the way home

>Made pitch for hastily announced withdrawal from Syria, widely seen as a win for Putin which forced Mattis out.

<Clips of POTUS' speech

<They asked for 6 months, I gave it to them. They asked for another 6 months, I gave it to them. They asked for more time, I said nope, already gave you time we're doing it differently now.

>America shouldn't be doing the fighting for every nation, especially not being reimbursed. If they want us to do the fighting, there's a price to be paid, sometimes monetary. We're no longer the suckers, folks. No longer suckers for the world.

>The idea that America shouldn't be the police for the world has a long precedent

>Experts closest to POTUS are the most concerned. Doing things suddenly and make excuses after the fact.

>Ever wonder what they know that we haven't seen? SOMETHING led to the sudden resignation of Mattis.

>POTUS only understood what the resignation of Mattis really meant after days of TV reports, according to NYT reporters, that's why POTUS is forcing him out early.

>POTUS stoking fears by saying there's no particular hurry to name a replacement for Mattis, Shanahan is doing just fine right now, and in no hurry for the government to reopen

<Clip of POTUS saying whatever it takes, we will have a wall and security to a question asking how long the government will be shutdown.

>Susan Rice and Beto O'Rourke say POTUS is a threat in the White House

>Beto wrote his fear that we'll choose certainty, strength and predictability over this constant dysfunction, even at the cost of our democracy. If there were ever a man to exploit this moment, it's Trump.

>In the backdrop of Mattis leaving, Susan Rice wrote in a NYT opinion piece titled Threat in the White House, POTUS couldn't care less about facts, intelligence, military analysis or the national interest. He refuses to take seriously the views of his advisers, announces decisions on impulse and disregards the consequences of his actions. In abandoning the role of a responsible commander in chief, Mr. Trump today has done more to undermine American national security than any foreign adversary. If she means it, that cuts ice.

>In the midst of all this turmoil, nuclear sabre rattling from Putin with claims that they have a nuclear missile capable of hypersonic speeds that will be formerly added to their arsenal next year. Calling it a wonderful new years gift, this in the backdrop of POTUS pulling out of Syria…

<Talking heads introduced: Malcolm Nance, Eleanor Clift, and David Jolly

<Malcom, thoughts on Susan Rice's assessment

>Facts are driving her.

>POTUS fundamentally believes in autocracy with buddy Putin and is actively undermining NATO and the force of good spreading democracy.

>Wants to get rid of NATO, hinted at the belief that the US should withdraw from NATO.

>POTUS undermining fundamental beliefs established in WWII, doesn't believe in anything we've believed in since America's founding.

>Susan is right. POTUS doesn't believe in what America stands for. Believes in an alternate reality where fascism rules.

(2/2)

<Eleanor, how do you distinguish between isolationism and POTUS becoming a threat and POTUS' claim that Saudi Arabia is stepping up and that it's nice when other wealthy countries help with the rebuild.

>Taking a VERY simplistic approach to foreign policy that we're suckers and getting taken advantage of but it's appealing to his base and those that don't want to examine the complexities involved.

>POTUS forcing Mattis out and sending Shanahan, a procurement assessor-not a strategist, to the NATO meeting is playing into Putin's hand and is undermining the last 70 years of what we've been working for and does not represent the will of the people–whose will POTUS certainly didn't earn.

>POTUS is squandering America and wants everyone to believe that he alone can fix it.

<Eleanor makes a point in that ACTING Secretary doesn't have the congressional support or gravitas that a longer term chief would and adds to the other ACTING positions, David, do you view that as problematic?

>Yes, all these ACTING positions are just yes men, should have checks against that.

>IF Obama lead from behind, POTUS is certainly being led by a leash but by whom and to what end?

<You're implying that POTUS is leading domestic policy by retweet and foreign policy by who? The Kremlin?

>You can make that argument to a point but as an aside there's a level of incompetence there with POTUS

<POTUS revealed a SEAL team secretly in Iraq by his surprise secret visit by taking a selfie with a Lt. Cmdr who claimed he was a chaplain with SEAL Team Five, Malcolm, does this compromise operational security?

>POTUS violates CONSTANTLY! Almost weekly, remember the time he revealed covert Israeli operations to their enemy, the Russians?

>POTUS is incompetent because he doesn't care about the rules, takes pictures with those that have SCI clearance. Exploited the SEAL team, Bush at least digitized and concealed their faces

<Eleanor, would this be a big deal if Obama had done this?

>Of course but POTUS doesn't care about the rules, was frustrated about the lights out conditions when he landed. Wants rose petal landings.

>Ignorant of how government works and the complexity of foreign policy.

>Treats everything like a financial decision, relies on his gut feeling.

>Need a government with more complexity and analysis, not one that operates on the whim of one man.

>Was time to rethink how long we've been in Syria and Afghanistan but not overnight.

>Just sent troops to the southern border for a mystical non-existent caravan, three times what was in Syria

>There's a price to pay for how Trump operates.

>Brings in good people that do good things and then gets rid of them when they're done, that's why he likes acting positions, easier to get rid of
