Digital voice modes encode speech into a data stream before transmitting it.
APCO P25 - Found in repurposed public safety equipment from multiple vendors. Uses IMBE or AMBE CODEC over C4FM.
D-STAR - Open specification with proprietary vocoder system available from Icom, Kenwood, and FlexRadio Systems. Uses AMBE over GMSK with VoIP capabilities.
DMR - Found in both commercial and public safety equipment from multiple vendors. Uses AMBE codec over a C4FM modulation variant with TDMA.
System Fusion - Open specification with proprietary vocoder system available from Yaesu. Uses AMBE CODEC with C4FM modulation.
NXDN Used by Kenwood (Nexedge) and Icom (IDAS)
Google Play has a free program that will decode ham digital PSK31 Digital data streams with a "Waterfall Display" just by putting your android phone next to your Shortwave radio speaker. Lot of free stuff out there to decode digital stuff from hams.
Exactly, good summary!!! There are so many modes now that it is hard to follow them all. There is even HELLSCHREIBER (HELL) which is really just sending individual letters as pictures.

As Florida teachers grieve over the mass shooting that left 17 students and colleagues dead last week, some of them may be surprised to learn they’ve been helping fund the firearms industry—including the company that made the gun used that bloody Wednesday.
A state pension plan for Florida teachers held 41,129 shares in American Outdoor Brands Co. valued at more than a half-million dollars, according to a Dec. 31 securities filing listing the plan’s holdings. Formerly known as Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Massachusetts-based American Outdoors manufactured the semiautomatic AR-15 assault rifle that was used in the Feb. 14 attack on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
The securities filing, posted on the pension plan’s web site, shows that the Florida Retirement System Pension Plan also invested in gun company stock issued by Sturm & Ruger Co., Vista Outdoor Inc. and Olin Corp. All of these companies manufacture firearms or ammunition, including assault rifles.
