Syrian troops enter Kurdish-held town after Turkey threatens offensive

Syria’s military has entered a flashpoint Kurdish-held town and raised the national flag after Turkey threatened to launch an offensive.

A Kurdish official said the troops arrived only at the front lines in Manbij but an agreement is being worked out with the Russians and the Syrian government that, in case of a full withdrawal of US troops, the government would take over.

Ilham Ahmed said the US troops who patrol the town and the tense front line with Turkey-backed fighters have not yet withdrawn from Manbij.

“The aim is to ward off a Turkish offensive,” Ms Ahmed said. “If the Turks’ excuse is the (Kurdish militia), they will leave their posts to the government.”

A resident of Manbij said there was no sign of government troops.

US president Donald Trump threatened on Friday to close the southern border if Congress does not agree to provide $5 billion (€4.4 billion) for his promised wall along the Mexico borderline.

With large parts of the federal government shut down for lack of funding in a dispute over the proposed wall, and Congress adjourned until next week, Mr Trump was in the White House firing off angry tweets.

“We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with,” said Mr Trump.

“Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border,” he added.

Newly declassified files show officials did not want business affected by political tussle over reform package

The British government decided to “ring-fence” the Hong Kong problem and divert its energy to secure commercial interests in China soon after talks on the city’s pre-1997 democratic reform collapsed, newly released files have revealed.

The confidential records, declassified by Britain’s National Archives this week for public inspection, shed light on London’s expedient approach to China in wake of the breakdown of negotiations over Hong Kong’s constitutional future.

From April to November 1993, diplomats from the Chinese and British governments held 17 rounds of talks over governor Chris Patten’s electoral reform package, which would give more than a million electors a vote in nine new functional constituencies.

The controversial proposal angered Beijing, which argued that it breached the Basic Law – the city’s mini-constitution – and Sino-British agreements. The negotiations broke down in November 1993.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:10 P.M.) – On Friday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Syrian Arab Army (SAA) reached an agreement that would see the city of Manbij transferred to the latter.

However, despite reaching the agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Syrian Arab Army has yet to enter the city of Manbij.

According to a military source in the area, the Syrian Arab Army deployed around the outskirts of Manbij while awaiting the green light from the Syrian Democratic Forces to enter the city.

As shown in the map above, the Syrian Arab Army is deployed at the western and southwestern outskirts of Manbij.
