SEARS fucked themselves for not competing with Amazon.
What they should have done is to turn Sears stores into showrooms and delivery centers for THOUSANDS of small online businesses
And they should have provided IT support for the online stores of these businesses and a consolidated store site at sears.com where anyone can search for categories of product and find the small business's online store.
And they should have provided warehousing for these THOUSANDS of small businesses and shipping of products to local stores where the customer can come in, pick up their order, and browse a selection of products popular in their area in case they want to buy something else too.
And to police these THOUSANDS of online businesses, Sears should have had an approved by Sears label program
Then if a small manufacturer of a great tool sets up an online store on the Sears site, and after inspections it is determined to be of the high level of quality that the Craftsman line was known for, that company and that product could be granted the right to display
approved by Sears
On its store, and its product labelling and the local delivery centers would put some of this tool on display there.
So you see, if Sears management would have understood what Amazon was really up to (had nothing to do with books) then Sears could have
a) placed itself at the center of commerce in America
b) supported THOUSANDS of American small businesses
c) maintained physical locations all over the USA
d) solved the customer delivery problem in a way that would be nice for customers (no stolen packages from your porch, no morning off work waiting for packages, no drive to some wierd industrial courier warehouse locations)
e) done all the above in a fair way that did not fall afoul of anti-trust laws but SUPPORTED a rich and diverse culture of Made In America
You could try sending a memo to everyone in the company with this idea. Work it over and write up and improved version if you want to. Discuss it with friends over the weekend.
Don't ask for an angel to descend and save you.
Band together and save yourselves.
