NASA's New Horizons Ready for Historic Flyby of Ultima Thule in the Kuiper Belt

On New Year's Day (Jan. 1), New Horizons will fly by the distant object Ultima Thule in the Kuiper Belt, a realm of icy objects that orbit the sun well beyond the dwarf planet Pluto. The flyby is a second for New Horizons, which flew by Pluto in July of 2015, and will mark the first-of-its-kind close look at a Kuiper Belt object forged during the birth of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago.

Ultima Thule — officially known as 2014 MU69 — is 4.1 billion miles from Earth and about 1 billion miles beyond Pluto. Not a lot is known about Ultima Thule. It is much smaller than Pluto, but its exact size and shape are unknown.

The name Ultima Thule was chosen through a nickname campaign hosted by the New Horizons team. Thule was a mythical island on medieval maps, thought to be the most northern point on Earth. Ultima Thule essentially means "beyond Thule," which suggests something that lies beyond what is known. It's fitting, considering New Horizons' pioneering journey.

Owing to it’s mysterious nature, there are many fictional and poetic references to Thule. The Thule Society was founded in Germany after WW I. It was a group of extreme right occultists that believed in a historical Thule, or Hyperborea, as the ancient origin of the "Aryan race". Many members of Thule Society had close links to what would later become the Nazi party. Of course there are many secret society/occult connections for the amusement of so inclined anons….
