Transformers popping all over the place can be caused by lack of sync between sinewaves between substation transformers in between power plants.
This would seem possible thru a hack.
Remembering in the 80s or 90s when the entire third of the country lost "sync" and could not get back online properly.
Keeping in mind a hack can be White or Black hat project depending on the purpose.
