UK to Establish New Overseas Military Bases After Brexit
Currently Britain has several overseas military bases, including bases on Cyprus, the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar and the Indian Ocean, but is reportedly planning to expand its global military presence.
London is planning to set up new military bases in the Caribbean and in Southeast Asia after it completes the Brexit process, The Sunday Telegraph reported, citing British Secretary of State of Defence Gavin Williamson. He reportedly called Brexit "the biggest moment" for the UK since the end of the Second World War and said that it would allow London to "recast ourselves in a different way" and "play the role on the world stage that the world expects [the UK] to play".
"For so long — literally for decades — so much of our national view point has actually been coloured by a discussion about the European Union. This is our moment to be that true global player once more", he said.
The secretary of defence further stated that leaving the EU would allow the UK to forge deeper ties with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, as well as with Caribbean and African states.
An anonymous source close to Williamson earlier told the newspaper that new bases could be stationed in Singapore or Brunei, and on Montserrat Island or in Guyana within the next few years.
The UK currently has 15 overseas military bases, including on the Falkland Islands, in Cyprus, Canada, Gibraltar and the British Indian Ocean Territory, but British forces are due to leave their German base in 2019.

Turkish media reveals half of French bases in Syria to get gaps in defenses once US troops withdraw
US troops pulling out of Syria have been manning several of France’s bases there, Turkish state media reported, while exposing locations of 9 French-occupied sites. It implied that Paris soon won’t be able to defend Syrian Kurds.
There are at least nine French bases scattered across northern Syria, according to the investigation carried out by Anadolu Agency. France apparently expanded its presence since March, when the media counted only five French military facilities.
At least four of the French bases in northern Syria are also manned by the withdrawing US troops, the report says. The other five would also be left more vulnerable since France can only “ensure their continued mobility by relying on” US troops or YPG militia for support.
“Under current circumstances, France does not seem to be able to provide a similar level of support to the YPG / PKK by filling the gap that will arise from the withdrawal of the US from Syria,” it adds.
While the US-led coalition against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Syria has been relying on Kurdish militias on the ground, Ankara sees the YPG, or People’s Protection Units, as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which it considers terrorist and blames for attacks at home.
France has been secretive on its operations in Syria, saying only that about 1,100 soldiers serve in the Middle East. The exact numbers of troops in Syria haven’t been revealed, even since the Operation Chammal started in Syria back in September 2015.
On December 19 US President Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw the US troops – some 2,000 – from Syria, citing the “defeat” of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). The withdrawal is reportedly to take between two and three months. So far the US troops abandoned only one base in north-eastern Syria, according to Turkish media.

Israel Up in Arms Over Jordan Minister Filmed Stepping on Its Flag
Despite Jordan being one of the few Arab countries to have a diplomatic relations with Israel, it has caused ire after one of its highest-profile officials is believed to have defiled the Israeli state symbol, and, simultaneously, that of its national identity.
Israel’s foreign minister issued a note of protest Sunday to Jordan after one of the country’s ministers was captured on camera stepping on an image of the Israeli flag while entering a meeting at a trade complex last week.
The image of the flag was affixed to the floor just inside the entrance of the premises to protest the conflict between Israel and Palestine in the West Bank, as well as normalised ties between the Jewish state and Amman, according to union officials.
Israel demanded that Jordan’s ambassador clarify the incident on Sunday, the foreign ministry said.
"The foreign affairs ministry considers the incident in which a Jordanian minister insulted the Israeli flag in Amman as serious", a statement said, while Jordanian Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz was reported to have entered that same building through a side door.
Jordan and Egypt are the only Arab countries to retain diplomatic ties with Israel, and one of the few not to deny the existence of the state of Israel.

“Flag of shame”: Video of French protesters tearing down EU flag goes viral
During the seventh consecutive weekend of yellow vest protests in Paris, a group of protesters can be seen taking down the EU flag.
The sources of the video, which surfaced yesterday, say it took place during Act VII (the seventh protest weekend).
When the flag is taken down people cheer and a French account that posted the video calls it “the flag of shame”.
Yellow vest protests took place all over France and one of the targets of the protesters was the mainstream media as it “spread fake news” about the size of the movement.

Operation Flicker – Child Pornography Found At High Levels of Government
The aim on Operation Flicker was to shut down child pornography on the internet, but in the process, they found that many government and military personnel were viewing and download child pornography on their work computers. This operation has been kept fairly quiet, for obvious reasons.
The following is a write-up by Voice of America on the government investigation known as “Operation Flicker.”
Federal investigators have identified members of the U.S. military and defense contractors who allegedly bought and downloaded child pornography, at times on government computers. Some of the individuals have high-level security clearances.
The Pentagon released 94 pages of documents related to investigations that date back to 2002. Many names and details are blacked out, but the facts that remain are disturbing.
A contractor with top secret clearance, tasked with providing support to the National Security Agency, was charged with possessing child pornography. Investigators say he tampered with his work computer after agents searched his home. He fled the country and is believed to be in Libya. The case is closed until he is arrested and extradited.
A National Reconnaissance Office contract employee acknowledged he regularly viewed sexually explicit images of children.
One sailor admitted to accessing child pornography while stationed on the Naval destroyer U.S.S. Mason. He was sentenced to nearly four years in prison.
The findings come from a wider investigation conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. That probe, dubbed Operation Flicker, identified more than 5,000 individuals who subscribed to child pornography websites. An assistant U.S. attorney general requested that the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, under the auspices of the Pentagon’s Inspector General, assist in identifying Pentagon-affiliated individuals.
