what you say is true. on a note related to hidden and southern, I grew up here my whole life and only when O studied Anthro did I ever learn this factoid:

North Mississippi used to have a Jewish community esp in M. Mississippi before desegregation.

apparently when the Klan was at the height of making public appearances in the street during days of civil rights era, they posed an ultimatum to the Jewish community: stand in opposition to the darkies or join them. most packed their shit up and left, the remaining literally became crypto jews hiding their affiliation. Their descendants are still in N. Mississippi and they have one traveling rabbi that goes from place to place in a route. I think I encountered some after Katrina, the home I delivered to had a Hebrew sigil on the door facing outward. I asked if it was Hebrew curiosly and they kinda nervously said yeah and quickly ended the convo.

Also hidden history even to natives

there is a Community of Jews for Jesus (cant recall proper term) somewhere nearby. An a abandoned building on a county road nearby used to be their spot still has markings. sightings by others here and there of people that identify with that group. reports say their garb and physical resembles hasidic or other orthodox.

Finally, before Keesler AFB was built this place at least on Coast was haven of Dixie Mafia (even they I always thought were made up). The first wave of airmen were only allowed out of base in pairs if that tells you anything.

One night at a USO club (had no idea they existed stateside) in Gulfport / Biloxi some Airmen got seriously messed up by some members of Doxie mob. The beef with airmen was because they felt they could operate in open before, then because of Keesler their style got crimped. When base commander learned what happened, he ordered march on the streets to display resolve and force.

so yeah sir you are right hidden things in small towns
