US and Israel to leave Unesco over listing of Palestinian sites

The United States and Israel are set to leave Unesco, the United Nations cultural agency, late on Monday over the body’s decision to recognise several contested landmarks as belonging to the State of Palestine.

The withdrawal, which takes effect at midnight, comes one year after US President Donald Trump removed Washington as a member of the body, a move closely followed by Israel.

The agency is one of the most important in the world, serving as a protector of some of the most historic sites by listing them on its World Heritage list.

Two of those on the list angered both the US and Israel. In 2017, Unesco voted to make the old city of Hebron, the largest city in the occupied West Bank, a world heritage site. As part of that designation, the contested site at the centre of the city, the Ibrahimi Mosque to Muslims or the Cave of the Patriarchs to Jews, is also deemed a world heritage site.

Revised U.S.-S. Korea free trade deal takes effect

SEOUL, Dec. 31 (UPI) – The revised free trade agreement between the U.S. and South Korea will take effect this week, Seoul's trade, industry and energy ministry said.

The two countries will notify each other Tuesday that legal procedures to ratify the revised trade deal have completed, according to the ministry.

The U.S and South Korea began renegotiation for the trade pact earlier this year after U.S. President Donald Trump called the trade agreement a "terrible deal."

Under the revised deal, the U.S. extends a 25 percent tariff on imports of Korean pickup trucks by another 20 years until 2041.

Electronic 'tags' surveillance centre now operational

The Justice Ministry on Monday opened a new centre capable of monitoring the movements of convicted offenders wearing electronic "tags", both in Thailand and overseas.

"It offers an alternative to imprisonment, reduces the chances of people learning more ways to commit crime while in prison, and allows those offenders to be with their families, mix in society as usual and make a living," Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Prajin Juntong said when opening the centre at the Probation Department in Bangkok's Laksi district.

Electronic monitors would be prescribed for offenders on probation, parole or convicted of petty crime. Their use also would be extended to juvenile offenders, ACM Prajin said.

Director-general Prasarn Mahaleetrakul said 4,000 electronic monitoring bracelets would be available for issue next month. The department had leased them from a private company for use until September 2020.

The monitoring centre would operate around the clock and could follow the movements of those assigned tags worldwide, using mobile phone networks, he said.

Arctic Ice Volume Shames Climate Experts …Antarctic Stations Show Cooling, Not Warming

We constantly hear from the untrustworthy media how polar ice is melting rapidly – due to human-induced global warming.

But when we look at the real data, we understand why audiences worldwide increasing distrust the mainstream media and their constant stream of doomsday reports, which they uncritically produce.

Recently I looked at some island stations near Antarctic, a continent where we are told melting ice will lead to many meters of sea level rise if we continue emitting CO2 into the atmosphere business as usual. These stations I examined are:

– Base Arturo P

– Bellingshause

– Centro Met.An, Marsh

– Base Orcadas

– Great Wall

– Jubany

The temperatures at the six stations, which are not subjected to any urban heat island effects and located in the middle of the natural elements, are plotted below and show no warming at all. Instead we see a bit of overall cooling:

Chinese police officers given exemption from prosecution

From February, officers will no longer be held legally responsible for damage to the property of individuals or organisations caused in the performance of their duty

Announcing the new regulations at a press conference on Saturday, Guo Lin, a spokeswoman for the public security ministry said they were necessary to enable officers to do their work without fear of retribution.

In the event of an officer damaging the legitimate rights or interests of a citizen or institution, the injured party would, however, still be entitled to compensation from the relevant public security authority, she said.

Closer Everyday.. What do you get for pretending the dangers not real

Revelation 13:15

“And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

‘Are you there, God? It’s me, Alexa.’ Tech and religious leaders ponder the future of AI together

Can a computer become God? Or, more to the point, could humans invent AI that can convincingly impersonate God — and if so, would humans bother to worship it?

That was one of the questions explored Saturday by technology experts, the faithful and everyone in between at a conference devoted to artificial intelligence and faith at Seattle Pacific University.

The concept of “AI Almighty” might not be as outlandish as it seems. Last year, a former Uber engineer founded a nonprofit religious organization called The Way of the Future. Its mission: creating an AI deity. New York Magazine writer Andrew Sullivan wrote Friday that America’s religious inclinations are succumbing to other devotions

And at least one participant at Saturday’s Technology and Faith conference in Seattle noted that AI might fit modern day interpretations of the Antichrist, as described in the New Testament: An all-worshiped leader, sometimes described as “the Beast,” who aims to supplant faith with temporal pursuits. Theology aside, it’s not much of a stretch to see today’s culture as wound to near-religious fervor over the next technological wonder and looking to it for guidance every hour of the day.

Elizabeth Warren and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

President Barack Obama’s “Consumer Czar” Elizabeth Warren was appointed by Obama to help set up and, many fear, to eventually run the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). In March 2011, Warren testified to Congress about the CFPB’s role in a 50-state settlement underway with the nation’s largest mortgage lenders related to alleged improper foreclosure procedures.

Through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the open records laws of the states, Judicial Watch obtained documents that show that Warren’s and the CFPB’s involvement in the mortgage settlement negotiations is much greater than she told Congress. Following the release of these documents, the House Financial Services Committee and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee sent a letter to Department of the Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner requesting more documents regarding the mortgage settlement.

Vatican spokesman, deputy, resign over strategy differences

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican spokesman and his deputy resigned on Monday over disagreements on strategy, ending a year of upheaval in the Holy See's communications structure.

A brief Vatican statement gave no reason for the resignations. Spokesman Greg Burke, an American, tweeted that he and his Spanish deputy, Paloma Garcia Ovejero, had quit to let Pope Francis appoint a new team in what was a "time of transition".

A Vatican source said both Burke and Ovejero had wanted more autonomy from the Vatican department that oversees all communications, known as the Dicastery for Communications.

They quit two weeks after Pope Francis appointed a personal friend, Italian journalist Andrea Tornielli, to become editorial director of all Vatican communications.

The source said it was believed to be the first time both posts had changed hands simultaneously, underscoring the differences of opinion.

Abortion Leading Cause of Death in 2018 with 41 Million Killed

Abortion was the number one cause of death worldwide in 2018, with more than 41 million children killed before birth, Worldometers reports.

As of December 31, 2018, there have been some 41.9 million abortions performed in the course of the year, Worldometers revealed. By contrast, 8.2 million people died from cancer in 2018, 5 million from smoking, and 1.7 million died of HIV/AIDS.

Worldometers — voted one of the best free reference websites by the American Library Association (ALA) — keeps a running tally through the year of major world statistics, including population, births, deaths, automobiles produced, books published, and CO2 emissions.

It also records the total number of abortions in the world, based on the latest statistics on abortions published by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, just under a quarter of all pregnancies (23 percent) were ended by abortion in 2018, and for every 33 live births, ten infants were aborted.
