If you watch planes a whole lot you will sometimes, occasionally, see one whose radar transponder is still turned on after landing. It will indicate altitude = GND. Other times you will see a temp callsign of GNDTEST, where maintenance personnel are obviously check out a plane's avionics on the ground. Sometimes we are able to follow the progress of a plane as it taxis on the ground, not that often. Not a pilot here either but I believe pilots probably usually turn off their ADSB transceiver shortly after landing, and switch it on just before takeoff during the instrument check phase.
