Former UK Ambassador: Restoration Of Syrian-European Relations Is Matter Of Time Only

Former UK Ambassador to Syria and Bahrain said that the restoration of the European relations with Syria is “a matter of time only” and suggested that this may happen next year.

“We may witness the return of the British and French ambassadors to Damascus next year … The European return to Syria will be unconditional, their situation doesn’t allow them to impose any conditions,” Peter Ford added during an interview on the al-Mayadeen TV on December 30.

Ford, who is close to the family of Syria’s first lady, said that the time has come for Syria to return to the Arab league and that the U.S. can’t do anything to stop this. The former diplomat went on to accuse Qatar of funding terrorism and conspiring to overthrow the Syrian regime.

“Qatar invested in the terrorist groups in Idlib [in northern Syria] and continue to do so,” said Ford.

Turkey Orders FSA To Withdraw From Frontline With Manbij

According to the pro-opposition news agency, Ankara backed-off from its plans to attack the city, which is held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), as a result of the high-level Russia-Turkish meeting held in Moscow two days ago.

Earlier this week, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) announced its withdrawal from Manbij and called on the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) to protect the city from Turkey’s threats. The army responded within few hours and deployed a large force in the outskirt of the Manbij.

However, U.S. and French forces didn’t withdraw from the city. Later, a local official said that the SAA was deployed only on the front line with Turkish-backed forces and said that the city is still under the control the SDF’s Manbij Military Council (MMC).

A part of this is Reuters’ report that US commanders want the Kurdish fighters in Syria to keep the Pentagon-supplied weapons. This would, in turn, likely require “specialists” to train them in using the weapons, which would lead to an indefinite presence of some US personnel.

Facebook Suspends Accounts Referring To Cop-Killer As An "Illegal Immigrant"

When a law enforcement officer in Newman, California was shot and killed in a traffic stop on December 26, 2018, media outlets around the nation reported on his death. Many tributes and posts were honoring fallen Corporal Ronil Singh who died in the line of duty. When reporting the facts around the incident, authorities confirmed that the suspect was in the United States illegally and his lack of citizenship made identifying him that much more difficult.

Police tracked down the suspect and managed to locate his vehicle. They executed a search warrant at the mobile home complex where the truck was found and found the suspect not too long after. Corporal Singh was shot and killed less than 100 miles from Facebook headquarters, which means he died protecting the community of workers at the social media company.

Now that company is dishonoring his memory by suspending Facebook users who refer to the suspect, Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 32, as an "illegal alien" or "illegal immigrant" citing that use of such language is against their "hate speech" and harassment policy. If this isn't the nail in the coffin for all of the people who still use Facebook with an ounce of decency, I don't know what is.

Arriaga is not only charged with murdering Corporal Singh, he has had several run-ins with the law in the past and openly promoted himself as a member of the Sureno street gang. Sheriff Christianson of the Newman police department said Arriaga had two previous drunk driving convictions in Madera County. Facebook's stance on censoring crimes committed by anyone is unacceptable. Not only was Arriaga an illegal immigrant, but Corporal Singh was a legal who came to the United States lawfully.

"This suspect, unlike Ron – who immigrated to this country lawfully and legally to pursue his lifelong career of public safety, public service and being a police officer – this suspect is in our country illegally. He doesn't belong here. He's a criminal," Sheriff Christianson said.

PM: Election campaign would be worst time for US to release peace plan

The United States is unlikely to roll-out its long awaited peace blueprint during the Israeli election campaign because it wants to maximize, not minimize, its chance of success, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday.

Asked at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro about the timing of the publication of the plan, Netanyahu said Washington is interested in giving that plan the greatest chance of success, “and in their estimation elections are the time when it will have the least chance of succeeding.”

The prime minister said that it would be preferable to have a public discussion about the plan after the elections, not during them, since the way in which different actors relate to the plan will “understandably” be of a different nature if released during the campaign.

There is some speculation now that the US might present the plan after the elections, while coalition negotiations are underway. In this case, the plan would then become a central consideration for parties needing to decide whether or not to join the future government.

Asked about Israel’s ties with Arab states in the region and when he will make another official visit to an Arab state as he did in October to Oman, Netanyahu said he would not say when he will meet publicly with the next Arab leader, “But it is not going to be very long.”

“I can tell you that I meet with many Arab leaders,” he said. “Muslim and Arab leaders. I meet a lot of them, all the time.”

Netanyahu said he did not know whether the Trump peace plan, when presented, would bring the Palestinians to the peace table. But, he added, “What I am trying to do is normalize relations with the Arab world so that the dog starts wagging the tail, and not the other way around.”

Jerusalem has long been frustrated that the Palestinians have a seeming veto over the normalization of ties between Israel and the Arab world, and would like to now see the Persian Gulf emirates – because they are interested in closer cooperation with Israel – nudging the Palestinians toward being more accommodating and compromising in their positions on the peace process.

Turning to the situation in the north, Netanyahu said that the operation to uncover and destroy Hezbollah attack tunnels has deprived the organization of a central component in a future surprise war against Israel.

Russia-mania takes over the world

In 2018, there were few things Western elites didn’t blame on Russia.

Over the summer, Sweden’s defence commission warned that ‘a larger European conflict could start with an attack on Sweden’. Politicians and military planners clearly agreed – in June, 22,000 Swedish volunteer soldiers were called up for the largest surprise exercise since 1975.

The protagonist of this European conflict wasn’t named as such, but it didn’t need to be. Because every politician and civil servant, every pundit and broadcaster, just knows that the protagonist is Russia. Because that is the function ‘Russia’ – alongside associated dread words such as ‘Vladimir Putin’ or ‘Russian oligarchs’ – now plays in the political imagination of Western elites. It is the catch-all, go-to explanation for their travails. The assumed military demiurge of global instability. The real, albeit dark and hidden, source of populist discontent.

Yet while Russia-mania is widespread among today’s political and cultural elites, it is not uniform.

For an older, right-wing section of the Western political and media class, otherwise known as the Cold War Re-Enactment Society, Russia looms large principally as a military, quasi-imperial threat. Jim Mattis, the former US marine and general, and now US defence secretary, said Russia was responsible for ‘the biggest attack [on the world order] since World War Two’. Whether this is true or not is beside the point. What matters is that Russia appears as a military aggressor. What matters is that Russia’s actions in Ukraine – which were arguably a defensive reaction to NATO and the EU’s expansion into Russia’s traditional ally – are grasped as an act of territorial aggrandisement. What matters is that Russia’s military operations in Syria – which, again, were arguably a pragmatic intervention to stabilise the West-stoked chaos – are rendered as an expression of imperial aggression. What matters is that Russian state involvement in the poisoning of the Skripals in Salisbury – which, given its failure, proved Russian incompetence – is presented as ‘part of a pattern of Russian aggression against Europe and its near neighbours, from the western Balkans to the Middle East’, to quote Theresa May.

And it matters because, if Russia is dressed up as the West’s old Cold War adversary, just with a new McMafia logo, then the crumbling, illegitimate and increasingly pointless postwar institutions through which Western elites have long ordered the world, suddenly look just that little bit more solid, legitimate and purposeful. And none more so than NATO.

This is why NATO has this year been accompanying its statements warning Russia to ‘stop its reckless pattern of behaviour’ with some of the largest military exercises since the fall of the Berlin Wall nearly three decades ago. Including one in November in Norway, involving 50,000 troops, 10,000 vehicles, 250 aircraft and 60 warships.

Then there is the newer form of Russia-mania. This has emerged from within the political and cultural elite that came to power after the Cold War, ploughing an uninspiring third way between the seeming extremes of the 20th century’s great ideologies. Broadly social democratic in sentiment, and elitist and aloof in practice, this band of merry technocrats and their middle-class supporters have found in ‘Russia’ a way to avoid having to face up to what the populist revolt reveals – that the majority of Western citizens share neither their worldview nor their wealth. Instead, they use ‘Russia’ to displace the people as the source of discontent and political revolt.

We have seen this play out in the US in the continuing obsession, fronted by Troll-Finder General Robert Mueller, over alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election. And the same obsession has emerged in the UK, too, with politicians and pundits claiming that a shadowy network of Russian influence tipped the EU referendum in favour of Leave.

It is never quite clear how the ‘Russians’ or ‘Putin’ did all this, beyond Facebook ads and decidedly dubious talk of so-called dark money. But then clarity is not the point for this stripe of Russia-maniac. He or she simply wants to believe that Trump or Brexit were not what they were. Not expressions of popular will. Not manifestations of popular discontent. Not democratic exercises.

No, they were the result, as one Tory MP put it, of ‘the covert and overt forms of malign influence used by Moscow’.
