US passes first anti-lynching law after Senate vote

The United States Senate has unanimously approved a bill to make lynching a federal crime in the country.

Three black senators introduced the bill in June to allow lynching to be charged as a hate crime alongside existing crimes such as murder.

For much of US history, lynchings were rarely prosecuted at all.

More than 200 anti-lynching bills have been introduced to Congress since 1918, all of which have been voted down.

Lynching is murder by a mob with no due process or rule of law. In the US South in the 19th and 20th Centuries, thousands of African Americans were lynched by white mobs, often by hanging.

In a tweet, Senator Kamala Harris - one of the bill's architects - said the vote was "history.

Congo cuts internet for second day to avert ‘chaos’ before poll results

KINSHASA (Reuters) - Democratic Republic of Congo's government cut internet connections and SMS services across the country for a second straight day on Tuesday as the country nervously awaited results from the weekend's chaotic presidential election.

Both the opposition and ruling coalition said on Monday they were on track to win after a turbulent election day on Sunday in which many Congolese were unable to vote due to an Ebola outbreak, conflict and logistical problems.

Barnabe Kikaya bin Karubi, a senior adviser to President Joseph Kabila, said internet and SMS services were cut to preserve public order after "fictitious results" began circulating on social media.

"That could lead us straight toward chaos," Kikaya told Reuters, adding the connections would remain cut until the publication of complete results on Jan. 6.

The signal to Radio France Internationale (RFI), one of the most popular news sources in Congo, was also down, and the government withdrew the accreditation of RFI's main correspondent in the country late on Monday for having aired unofficial results from the opposition.

A Year of P.C. Prudery and Ignorance

The task is daunting and the field jostles with contenders, but the 2018 prize for politically correct stupidity goes to the campaign against “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” a tune written by Frank Loesser in 1944, during World War II and the last administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It took awhile but the tune caught on.

“Baby, It’s Cold Outside” showed up in the 1949 film “Neptune’s Daughter,” with Ricardo Montalban crooning to Esther Williams and Red Skelton to Betty Garrett. The song won an Oscar and many artists have covered it, including the great Ray Charles with Betty Carter in 1961. Ricardo, Red, Ray, and the rest may have been trying to get below decks with the ladies, something that has happened since way back in the Garden of Eden.

Iranian security forces attack teachers’ demonstrations in Isfahan

Iran, Dec. 29, 2018 - On Thursday, teachers and education workers of Isfahan demonstrated in front of the education ministry headquarters. The demonstration took place in spite of efforts by the security and intelligence agents of the Iranian regime to dissuade the teachers by threatening to take severe actions against them.

Since early in the morning, security forces lined up in the streets surrounding the offices of the education ministry to prevent the protests from taking place.

However, the teachers did not back down and started their demonstration in Davazeh Dolat Street in front of the mayor’s office. Security forces attacked them with batons and pepper spray. Clashes ensued and the demonstrations continued, and security forces arrested several protesters.

Subsequently, groups of teachers gathered in front of the education ministry offices. Security forces attacked them and violently dragged several of them into their cars and took them away. Several others were forced into a clinic that was close to the location that the demonstration was taking place. A security police officer threatened the teachers.

Students stage protest, chanting “death to the dictator,” “have no fear, we’re all together.”

On Monday, December 31, 2018, in solidarity with students at the Science and Research Faculty of Azad (Free) University, students at Tehran University and other academic institutions staged a demonstration at Enghelab Square and in front of Tehran University to protest the death of several students in the deadly bus accident a few days earlier.

Throngs of repressive forces, including anti-riot units and plainclothes agents had been stationed there to prevent the spread of the protest.

The students were chanting, “Have no fear, we’re all together,” “neither threats, nor prison, can deter us,” and “death to the dictator.”

Plainclothes agents charged at the students and fired teargas canisters to disperse the crowd, who responded by chanting “you scoundrels”. The protesters called for the dismissal of Ali Akbar Velayti, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s advisor and Azad University’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Iranian authorities frantically warn about the threat of uprisings and the role of PMOI/MEK

Jan. 1, 2019 - On Sunday, the Iranian regime held “anti-demonstrations,” government-organized gatherings meant to prevent protests from erupting on the anniversary of the “Ashura uprising” in December 2009, where thousands of people poured into the streets of different cities in Iran and confronted security forces in heavy clashes. However, despite the widespread efforts led by the regime, the events turned out to be very desolate, with very few attendants, mostly agents of the Revolutionary Guards and the Basij.

Meanwhile, the remarks of high-ranking Iranian officials on the occasion shows the tension and fear that is plaguing the entire regime from the ongoing protests across the country and the role that the Iranian opposition is playing.

“Opportunists and anti-revolutionaries want to take advantage of the political turmoil inside the country,” warned Ali Larijani, the Speaker of the Iranian regime’s parliament, who spoke on the occasion of the Ashura uprising. “The opponents of the revolution are seeking an opportunity to cause damage to the revolution.”

Sweden ‘silently’ prepares for Ebola outbreak and builds isolation unit for Ebola patients

The deadly and highly contagious Ebola disease was previously a concern for a few countries in Central Africa. Today, as a result of globalisation and extensive migration, countries such as Sweden are also at risk of being hit by the dreaded epidemic.

The preparedness for an epidemic has been extremely poor in Sweden, but will now be somewhat better since the University Hospital in Malmö is building an isolation unit for ebola patients, national broadcaster SVT reports.

In the Southern Healthcare Region, there is concern about inadequate preparedness. It is not a question of if, but when, a new epidemic erupts, head of operations, Maria Josephson at Skåne University Hospital, states.

However, the unit, which is planned to be ready at the end of 2019 will only accommodate a few ebola patients. In case of a more extensive contamination it will not suffice.

Chinese naval commander says sinking US ship would end South China Sea spat

People’s Liberation Army Academy of Military Science Deputy Director Rear Admiral Luo Yuan has suggested that sinking two US supercarriers would resolve the dispute surrounding the East and South China Seas, News Corp Australia Network has reported, citing Taiwanese media.

Speaking at a Chinese military industry summit on December 20, Luo took aim at the US military, which he described as one of “five cornerstones” of possible US weakness. According to the academic, “what the United States fears the most is taking casualties.”

Pointing to China’s growing anti-ship and cruise missile capabilities, which he said are now able to get past a carrier’s escorts, Luo said that the destruction of a single carrier would cost 5,000 US servicemen’s lives, while destroying two such carriers would double the losses.
