Senate Judiciary Committee Sets Confirmation Hearings For AG Nominee Bill Barr Jan. 15-16

The Senate Judiciary Committee set confirmation hearings for President Trump’s AG nominee Bill Barr for January 15th and 16th.

William Barr, former Attorney General who served under George H.W. Bush was nominated by President Trump in December to be the next Attorney General.

Barr, 68, currently works as a lawyer at Kirkland & Ellis and served as United States Attorney General from 1991-1993.

Jeff Sessions resigned as Attorney General in early November at President Trump’s request.

Matthew Whitaker currently serves as Acting Attorney General. Whitaker also took control of Mueller’s Russian witch hunt from DAG Rod Rosenstein, although Rosenstein reportedly oversees the day-to-day operations.

If confirmed, Bill Barr will take over the Mueller investigation.

Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett previously cautioned against Trump choosing Barr to replace Sessions as AG saying he is a Washington insider.

As for William Barr, yes unquestionable integrity, a fine reputation, great experience – he brings gravitas to the job but he is an establishment figure at a time that I think we need a disruptor as Attorney General,” Jarrett said, adding, “Somebody who would vigorously go after corrupt officials at the FBI and Department of Justice who were abusing their positions of power and attempting to undermine democracy.”

Jarrett then concluded, “I’m afraid Barr is not that guy.”

Mr. Barr did however question Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation in a 19-page memo to Justice Department officials, reported the New York Times.

“Mueller should not be permitted to demand that the president submit to interrogation about alleged obstruction.”

“Mueller’s obstruction theory is fatally misconceived. As I understand it, his theory is premised on a novel and legally insupportable reading of the law. Moreover, in my view, if credited by the department, it would have grave consequences far beyond the immediate confines of this case and would do lasting damage to the presidency and to the administration of law within the executive branch.”

Bill Bar is already triggering Democrats over his criticisms of Mueller – hopefully the Democrats don’t turn the hearings into a circus like they did with Brett Kavanaugh.

CA Broadens Gun Confiscation Laws to Include Ammunition, Certain Magazines

Aspects of California’s gun confiscation laws broadened on January 1, 2019, as the state added ammunition and certain magazines to the list of items that can be confiscated when firearms are seized.

KRCR reports that Senate Bill 1200, which Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed into law, “adds ammunition and bullet drums to the list of items related to firearms that can be confiscated.”

This means that police executing a Gun Violence Restraining Order can not only sweep a gun owner’s home for firearms, but for ammunition and certain firearm accessories as well.

Other California gun controls which took effect January 1, 2019, include an expansion of training requirements necessary to acquire a concealed carry permit and inclusion of certain misdemeanors as justification for a lifetime ban on gun ownership.

The Wall Street Journal reports that misdemeanor domestic violence charges–such as “harmful touching of a spouse, roommate or dating partner”–can now be treated on part with domestic violence felonies and result in a total forfeiture of Second Amendment rights.

Mexican archaeologists find the temple of the Flayed Lord, where priests wore the skins of the dead after sacrificing them in gruesome rituals

The historic ind was made during recent excavations of Popoloca ruins in Puebla state

Experts found two lage skull-like stone carvings, and a stone trunk depicting the god

Statue of the god hand extra hand dangling off one arm, suggested god was wearing skin of a victim

Priests worshipped Xipe Totec by sacrificing then skinning victims and donning their skins

Mexican archaeologists have found the first temple of the Flayed Lord, a pre-Hispanic fertility god depicted as a skinned human corpse.

Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History said the historic find was made during recent excavations of Popoloca Indian ruins in Puebla state.

Experts found two skull-like stone carvings, believed to be used to 'plug' holes where skins were placed following the rituals, and a stone statue depicting the god, Xipe Totec.

It had an extra hand dangling off one arm, suggesting the god was wearing the skin of a sacrificial victim.

Each of the stone skulls is approximately 70 centimeters tall and weighs about 200 kilograms, archaeologists say.

Priests worshipped Xipe Totec by skinning victims and then donning their skins.

The Popolocas built the temple between A.D. 1000 and 1260 and were later conquered by the Aztecs.

Depictions of the god had been found before in other cultures, but not a whole temple.

Two sacrificial altars, three stone sculptures and various architectural elements were uncovered in a pyramidal basement of the Archaeological Zone of Ndachjian-TehuacĂĄn, in Puebla.

Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History said it 'confirms that this ancient city protects the first temple dedicated to this deity until now discovered in the country.'

Xipe TĂłtec ('our lord the flayed') was one of the most important gods of the pre-Hispanic era.

Its influence in the fertility, the regeneration of the agricultural cycles and the war, was recognized by numerous cultures of the West, Center and Gulf of Mexico, nevertheless,

Archaeologist NoemĂ Castillo Tejero, director of the Southern Project of the State of Puebla Popoloca Central Area, said the building would have been used between 1000 and 1260 AD.

4 presumed dead, 1 mariner missing as massive car carrier continues to burn in Pacific

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A large car carrier is still on fire and adrift in the Pacific as rescuers search for a mariner who went missing after the blaze.

Four other crew members from the vessel are “unresponsive” in the water and presumed dead.

Vessels on site are working to recover them, the Coast Guard said.

The 650-foot Panamanian-flagged vessel Sincerity Ace got into trouble on New Year’s Eve about 2,000 miles off Oahu.

Coast Guard and Navy aircrews and two commercial vessels rushed to the area and 16 crew members were rescued.

But the search continues ― across a 6,700-square-mile area — for the crew member who is still missing.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard said Wednesday that the ship has not yet been security and continues to burn.

In a bit of good news, the seas in the area have calmed. Waves are now at about 4 feet, from 16 feet earlier.

“We are thankful for the assistance the crews of these merchant vessels have given us during this event significantly reducing possible response time,” said Lt. Duane Zitta, of Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu.

“Their quick actions provided for the rescue of 16 members of the crew who would otherwise still be in the water and are continuing to aid us.”

The Sincerity Ace, built in 2009 according to Marine Traffic, was en route to Hawaii from Japan when the fire was reported. The Coast Guard was alerted to the vessel’s distress about 1:04 a.m. Hawaii time Monday.

Those involved in the search are:

Two Air Station Barbers Point HC-130 Hercules aircrews

A Navy 7th Fleet P-8 Poseidon aircrew

Crew of the Motor Vessel Green Lake

Crew of the SM Eagle

Crew of the Motor Vessel New Century 1

Crew of the Motor Vessel Venus Spirit

Crew of the Motor Vessel Genco Augustus

The International Maritime Organization says the Sincerity Ace is owned by Japan’s Shoei Kisen Co. Ltd.

Coast Guard officials say the ship’s owner is coordinating with merchant vessels for the transport of the rescued mariners. A salvage plan is being drawn up and commercial tugs have been dispatched by the company.

North Carolina Sheriffs, Dealing With Cartel Violence, Call for Congress to Fund Wall

More than 1,400 miles north of the southwest border, sheriffs are battling drug trafficking, overdoses, gang and cartel violence, and human trafficking.

“If something gets through the border, within a few days, two or three days, it’s across this country,” said Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page.

Sheriffs in North Carolina are calling on Congress to approve funding for a border wall and better border security.

North Carolina has become a major hub for the transport and distribution of wholesale cocaine and other drugs throughout the northeastern corridor, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Page said he does what he can to support the sheriffs situated in counties along the southwest border.

“If we can support them, it prevents a lot of those drugs from coming in and getting into our communities here in the interior United States,” Page said.

“If we fail to secure our borders, every sheriff in America will become a border sheriff.”

Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson said his county has huge problems with the Sinaloa cartel and its drug trafficking operations.

Alamance is right on the intersection of two major interstates, I-40 and I-95, and nearby city Greensboro has become the drug trafficking hub for the southeastern United States, Johnson said.

In March, 35 members and associates of the Nine Trey Gangsters, a set of the United Blood Nation gang, pled guilty in North Carolina to racketeering conspiracy and related charges of drug trafficking, wire fraud, and firearm possession, according to a 2018 DEA report.

The gang’s leaders were also directing—from both inside the prisons and in communities—the gang’s assaults, robberies, and drug trafficking up and down the Eastern United States, the report said.

Democrats ‘Didn’t Want to Hear’ Border Security Briefing, Says Rep. McCarthy

President Donald Trump had top lawmakers at the White House for a security briefing on Jan. 2, where security officials were to explain their need for further border barriers.

But the Democrat attendees didn’t want to listen and never actually got through the full briefing by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, said Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), House GOP leader, during a press gaggle after the briefing.

Once the secretary started, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) interrupted her, McCarthy said.

“They really didn’t want to hear it and they challenged some the points the secretary made.”

Schumer’s office didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Before the briefing, Trump told reporters that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and border patrol officials would make a plea for a border wall at the meeting, a part of his efforts to convince Democrats to give him funding for the long-promised project.

Shutdown

Trump has been saying since at least July he’d shut down the government if Congress wouldn’t deliver the wall funding.

Lawmakers managed to pass funding bills for about three quarters of the government, but when it came to the last one, which included the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) along with border security, Democrats blocked the wall funding in the Senate, where Republicans lacked a sufficient majority.

GOP Senators eventually kicked the can down the road, passing a Democrat-backed bill to fund the DHS until Feb. 8 without the wall money.

But this option failed in the House, where Republicans passed a bill with some $5 billion for the wall instead, which was in turn refused by Senate Democrats.

As a result, on Dec. 22, about quarter of the government ran out of money.

Trump said he’s willing to continue the shutdown until the wall money materializes, calling it “too important a subject to walk from.”

Democrats, who gain control of the House on Jan. 3, plan to pass a bill that would fund everything except for the DHS and another bill that would fund the DHS through Feb. 8 without wall construction funds.

The option was called “a non-starter” by White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders in a statement late on Jan. 1.
