I think fractional reserve banking is like the Social Security system: It was a bad idea; but now that we've had it for generations, society has adapted to it and getting rid of it is effectively impossible.

You didn't answer my question. The problems with the bimetallic system demonstrated that money cannot be backed by multiple commodities. When their relative value changes it screws everything up. So to back money with hard assets you need to pick One hard asset to use. Gold is the obvious one. But there is not nearly enough of it.
