Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö expressed deep concern about the future of democracy in Europe in his New Year speech.

In the speech, he also touched on social developments with the controversial increase in sex crimes and insecurity in Finland, Samhällsnytt reports.

He explained that Europe has “ended up in a destructive battle over its own values”, and specifically drew attention to the Yellow Vest protests in France.

Instead of exporting our European values, we now have to defend them at home.

The President also stated that “Finland is the most democratic, most equal and free country in the world.”

Two patriots meet: Viktor Orban talks with Brazil’s new President Bolsonaro

Prime Minister Viktor Orban held bilateral talks with new Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro during his working visit to Brazil on Wednesday, Orban’s press chief said.

The two leaders discussed opportunities for international, economic and political cooperation between their countries, Bertalan Havasi told MTI.

At the talks, Orban confirmed an invitation to Bolsonaro for a visit to Hungary, which the Brazilian president accepted. Orban on Tuesday attended Bolsonaro’s inauguration.

Russian MoD: More than 23 thousand terrorists killed in Syria last year

Moscow, SANA- Russian Ministry of Defense affirmed that thousands of terrorists were killed in Syria and hundreds of their positions, weapons warehouses and heavy equipment have been destroyed during the war against terrorism last year.

The Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that “In 2018, more than 23 thousand terrorists were killed in Syria, in addition to destroying 159 tanks, 57 armored vehicles, more than 900 cannons and about 3 thousand machinegun-equipped cars belonging to terrorist groups.”

“Since September 2015, more than 87 thousand terrorists including(830) of their leaders were killed and more than (4500) terrorists from the Commonwealth of Independent States were also killed,” the Ministry added.

The statement indicated that ” About 1,000 field camps, 10 thousand ammunition and fuel warehouses, 650 tanks and 700 vehicles belonging to terrorists in Syria were also destroyed.”

The Ministry said that “The Syrian Arab Army in cooperation with the supporting forces has established control over (96,5 %) of the Syrian territories.”

After media mix-up, China says Chang’e-4 makes first landing on moon’s far side

Official Chinese media confirmed that the nation’s robotic Chang’e-4 probe made the first-ever landing on the far side of the moon — but not before issuing, and then withdrawing, an initial set of announcements.

The honest-to-goodness announcement came via several state-run media outlets just after noon Beijing time on Jan. 3 (8 p.m. PT Jan. 2).

That’s about an hour after the Twitter accounts for China’s CGTV network and the China Daily newspaper flashed word of a landing. Within a minute or two, those tweets were deleted, but the media echoes nevertheless continued through the Twitterverse, mailing lists and online reports.

Those outlets apparently jumped the gun on what was intended to be a coordinated release of the news. In its re-issued announcement, CGTV said the landing took place at 10:26 a.m. Beijing time (6:26 p.m. PT), which meshes with the timing for the initial tweeted-then-deleted reports.

Chang’e-4 is the latest in a series of probes named after the moon goddess in Chinese mythology. The combination lander and rover was sent into space in early December, and followed a slow but efficient 4.5-day trajectory from Earth to the moon. The lander made a series of lunar orbits over the past couple of weeks to line it up for the landing.

Man arrested at Trump resort, said he was there to talk about trillions of dollars

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Authorities say a man was arrested for trespassing after he drove up to President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, told a Secret Service agent he was there to talk to the president about “his $6.3 trillion” and refused to leave.

Florida court documents show 30-year-old Brian Whitehurst pulled up to the president’s resort Sunday afternoon and told Secret Service Agent Tim Donohue he needed to talk to the president about the trillions of dollars. It’s unclear what he was referring to. Donohue and a Mar-a-Lago security official told Whitehurst he had to leave, but he refused, saying he had a reservation.
