Dershowitz: Trump Firing Comey Was a Mistake

Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said it was a mistake for President Donald Trump to fire James Comey as FBI director.

Dershowitz made his comments during a Thursday interview on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"It was a mistake to fire Comey, because that's what led to the selection of a special counsel," he said. "Had he not fired [him], Comey would have persisted in his investigation. It would have been quiet. It would have been over a long time ago. So, I think [Trump has] made a number of mistakes. I think some of his tweets have been a mistake."

He acknowledged Hillary Clinton would have likely fired Comey had she been elected president.

"And it would have been a mistake there, too," he said.

Dershowitz suggested Trump not pardon anyone connected to the case at this point. And he said Trump should not fire special counsel Robert Mueller and should stop tweeting. He also said Trump should never testify.

"Look, nobody interviews you trying to help you," he said, referring to any Trump testimony. "They're only trying to hurt you."

Dershowitz said he had preferred a non-partisan, expert commission, established to hear evidence about how Russia tried to influence the election and how the U.S. can stop it from doing that in the future.

"That would have been so much better," he said.
