Jewish leaders are calling for new editions of the Bible and Koran to carry warning messages which highlight anti-Semitic passages in the holy texts.

The recommendations have been made in a new document called ‘An End to Antisemitism! A Catalogue of Policies to Combat Antisemitism’.

It was produced following an international conference organised by the European Jewish Congress, at which academics gathered to discuss how prejudice and discrimination can be tackled.

Among the policies mentioned in the document was the idea of warning messages in holy texts, a topic discussed in a chapter entitled 'recommendations regarding Religious Groups and Institutions'.

The document reads: 'Translations of the New Testament, the Qur’an and other Christian or Muslim literatures need marginal glosses, and introductions that emphasize continuity with Jewish heritage of both Christianity and Islam and warn readers about antisemitic passages in them.

'While some efforts have been made in this direction in the case of Christianity, these efforts need to be extended and made consistent in both religions.'

Israel as a Cyber Super Power

Cybertech 2016 convened this week in Tel Aviv, and I was in the audience for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plenary address, courtesy of the America-Israel Friendship League and the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Israel has an ambitious domestic and international agenda designed to make it one of the world’s super cyber powers.

The prime minister has made cybersecurity one of his trademark issues and is a big promoter of the idea that better network defenses are essential for national security and that the information security industry is a driver of economic growth (Israel now has more than 300 cybersecurity companies, exports of $6 billion, and 20 percent of the world’s private investment in cyber). In his speech, Netanyahu stressed two large themes. First, there is a need for action now, and as a result some policies may be incomplete or eventually reversed, but the general direction has been decided and everyone needs to start moving. He returned to a metaphor from the army that he has used before of forces in the field changing direction even if every detail is not yet in place.

Second, Netanyahu highlighted a contradiction between the necessity of and the risks inherent in cooperation. The Israeli government is actively looking to partner with other countries and the private sector, but sharing information and capabilities will always be a calculated risk.

Four specific points in the speech were of interest. First, the standing up of the National Cyber Authority and the delineation of its authorities are running into some resistance, presumably primarily from the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency. The Shin Bet is responsible for defending critical infrastructure, has much of the country’s cyber capability, and does not want to give up influence. The prime minister spoke of challenging vested interests, including the intelligence agencies; the officials I spoke with took the resistance as an entirely predictable outcome of bureaucratic politics and expected the turf battles to be resolved quickly.

Second, the prime minister used a medical metaphor to explain the government’s responsibilities in defending the country against cyberattacks. The government’s role is to immunize organizations and individuals by developing best practices and standards that everyone should be expected to implement. The government will treat certain types of infections, and in some instances of massive, widespread attacks that could be likened to epidemics, the government will use military force and the intelligence agencies to "both treat the attack and treat the attacker."

Reagan’s Former Lawyer Named Next US Ambassador to Australia

A lawyer who advised former U.S. President Ronald Reagan will become the next U.S. Ambassador to Australia, the U.S. Senate decided on Jan. 3.

The U.S. Senate approved the appointment of Arthur Culvahouse Jr. during the final hours of the 115th Congress. Starting from March Culvahouse will replace acting U.S. Ambassador James Carouso, who temporarily filled the position after the 2017 departure of former U.S. Ambassador John Berry.

In a speech to the U.S. Senate on Dec. 4 (pdf), Culvahouse affirmed his commitment to the ambassador role.

“It is my deep honor to testify before you today as the President’s nominee to be Ambassador to Australia, a vital and steadfast ally of the United States. I am humbled by the trust the president has placed in me by considering me to fill this important role.”

President Donald Trump first nominated Culvahouse, a Republican and former lawyer to 1980s U.S. President Ronald Reagan, to be Australia’s U.S. Ambassador on Nov. 5.

Release Canadians From China, Australia’s Former Foreign Minister Says

Former Foreign Minister Gareth Evans is urging the Australian government to take bolder action against Beijing over its continuing detention of two Canadians in China.

In what he described to be an act of political retaliation by the communist regime, Evans slammed China’s arrests as “deeply troubling” and said the Australian government must act immediately.

“It’s time for the Australian government to join those others in the international community saying so loudly and clearly,” Evans said according to The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH).

Evans is one of Australia’s longest-serving foreign ministers, in office from 1988 to 1996, and personally knows one of the two Canadians being held. When Evans was president and chief executive of the International Crisis Group think-tank, his senior advisor for north-east Asia was none other than Michael Kovrig himself.

Kovrig is also a former Canadian diplomat. Both Kovrig and entrepreneur Michael Spavor were detained in China, days after Canadian authorities arrested Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou at the request of the United States at Vancouver International Airport, on Dec. 1.

Chinese authorities claim the two men were charged for posing a risk to Chinese national security. Chinese state media outlets reported both men were detained on Dec. 10. A day prior to the arrests, China warned Canada of “grave consequences” if Meng was not released immediately.

“In the case of Michael Kovrig, whom I know personally, I am totally confident that it is only about retaliation against Canada for the Meng case and, in reality, has nothing to do with his or Crisis Group’s foreign policy analysis and advocacy activities in China which have always been, to my knowledge, open and above board, objectively focused, and in fact well respected by Chinese policymakers, advisers and analysts,” Evans told the SMH.

The United States is trying to extradite Meng to investigate allegations she participated in a scheme to use the global banking system to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Conditions of Meng’s and Kovrig’s detention stand in stark contrast. According to reports, Meng has been released on bail and is staying at one of her multi-million dollar luxury properties in Vancouver. Meanwhile, Kovrig is being held in a Chinese prison at a secret location, subjected to daily interrogation and forced to sleep with lights on.
