I have this one patient who said he moved here from Israel when he was a little kid. He goes there often and when he was older he enlisted in their military, then came back home.

I said to him “so you live here, right? You grew up in America? You consider yourself American?” He said “of course!”

I said “so why do your loyalties lie with Israel?” He was baffled! He said “what do you mean?” I said “If you consider yourself an american but then go and enlist in another foreign states Military, your loyalties are NOT with America. So why live here? Why not enlist in YOUR nations army, if you consider yourself a proud American?”

He said “All Israelis have to enlist.” I said “but you said you were American!”

After a second I said “you know what? Do whatever you gotta do. But i want you to think about what I said. Figure out where your loyalties lie.”

Can you imagine what our founding fathers would say if they thought of the concept of a duel citizenship but in the other country it is mandatory to enlist in their military??
