Trump’s Claims About ‘Rapid’ Withdrawal Of Troops From Syria Appear To Be PR Move
The U.S. has no timeline to withdraw its forces from Syria but does not plan to stay in the war-torn country indefinitely, a senior official in the Department of State told the Reuters news agency on January 5.
“We have no timeline for our military forces to withdraw from Syria … It will be done in such a way that we and our allies and partners maintain pressure on ISIS throughout and we do not open up any vacuums for terrorists,” the official, who asked not to be identified, said.
Several U.S. officials told Reuters that the withdrawal from Syria could take several months. However, a senior administration official traveling with White House national security adviser John Bolton on a trip to the Middle East said U.S. military commander has assured U.S. President Donald Trump that their mission against ISIS “can be done in weeks.”
Meanwhile, other U.S. officials revealed to Reuters that a pre-scheduled conference for the counties participating in the US-led coalition have become a part of ongoing “damage control efforts” following Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria.
Ministers from around 79 countries are expected to attend the upcoming conference, which will be held in Washington on February 7.
“This [Trump’s withdrawal announcement] was a slap-dash, individual decision … This is nothing more than damage limitation,” a Pentagon official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Reuters.
Some describe these developments as an example of the ongoing efforts in the Department of State and the Pentagon to manipulate Trump’s decision in order to keep American forces in Syria as long as possible. Many in Washington apparently believe that the withdrawal from Syria will weaken the U.S. influence in the Middle East and empower Russia and Iran.

Cartels, Mexican Military Clash in Border City Before Presidential Visit
REYNOSA, Tamaulipas – Cartel gunmen and Mexican military forces clashed in this border city just hours before Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador visited Reynosa to push a new economic plan for border cities. The local head of the Gulf Cartel in the border city of Nuevo Progreso is presumed to have been killed in that clash.
The gun battle took place in the early morning hours of Friday when close to 20 SUVs with Gulf Cartel the Scorpions faction of the Gulf Cartel rolled into Reynosa as they continue their turf war with the faction called Los Metros. The two factions clashed in the city’s eastern side, including various industrial areas and the neighborhoods surrounding the city’s airport and near the international bridge with Pharr, Texas.

Created by the NATO-affiliated, UK-funded Institute for Statecraft in 2015, the Integrity Initiative was unmasked in November after hackers released documents detailing a web of politicians, journalists, military personnel, scientists and academics involved in purportedly fighting "Russian disinformation." The secretive, government-bankrolled "network of networks" has found itself under scrutiny for smearing UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn as a Kremlin stooge – ostensibly as part of its noble crusade against anti-Russian disinformation.
Now, new leaks show that the organization played a central role in shaping media narratives after Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were mysteriously poisoned in Salisbury last March. It's notable that many of the draconian anti-Russia measures that the group advocated as far back as 2015 were swiftly implemented following the Skripal affair – even as London refused to back up its finger-pointing with evidence.

After receiving the government's blessing, the Integrity Initiative (II) launched 'Operation Iris,' enlisting "global investigative solutions" firm Harod Associates to analyze social media activity related to Skripal.

NASA rescinds invitation to Russian space chief amid pressure from US lawmakers

MOSCOW, January 5./TASS/. Roscosmos is waiting for official explanations from NASA as to the return visit of a Russian delegation to the US, the state corporation said in a statement on Saturday.
Roscosmos expects official explanations regarding the return visit "in accordance with the earlier received invitation," it said.
The corporation said "work on the negotiating position of the state corporation on cooperation of the sides on the International Space Station program and other space programs has not been suspended as of yet".
Earlier, Russia’s state-run space corporation said it had not received an official notification from NASA that the visit of its chief Dmitry Rogozin to the United States was postponed.
NASA said in a statement on Friday that it had informed the Russian side Rogozin’s visit to the United States had to be postponed. Also, the agency said no new date for the visit had been set yet.
NASA’s spokeswoman Megan Powers said on Wednesday NASA was pushing ahead with preparations for Rogozin’s visit to the United States despite criticism in Washington. Earlier, a number of US officials and legislators opposed plans for Rogozin’s visit to the United States. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine told TASS in an interview last October he would like Rogozin to speak at Rice University (Houston, Texas) during his visit to the United States.
He also declared that the Trump Administration had made a decision to pause sanctions against Rogozin, thus enabling the head of the Russian space agency to pay a visit to the United States at NASA’s invitation. Rogozin has been under US sanctions since 2014 over the situation in Ukraine.
NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine visited Russia in October 2018. In particular, he delivered a lecture at Moscow State University and said relationship between Russia and the US in space was strong.
